Oil Level Indicator

If the oil level indication is only 1/4 above min, how much oil should be added to bring it back up to max. Had the oil filter housing gasket changed and lost a little.

The "min" mark represents 1 full quart low. so if you are 1/4 over minimum, you can add 3/4 of a quart to get it to full.

Min is suppose to be a quart.

However this thing is finicky and has a personality .
I would add a .5 quarts drive a little and add a little more if necessary.
Once you get to full I'm not sure what bumps the needle over.
The work order from my Indy says they put in 7.5 quarts on a oil change.
I notice it goes further with out me having to add when they do as
oposed to the dealer, and it doesn't read overfull .

I just changed the oil in my 2012 E91 and it shows on the oil indicator that it is full with 6 Quarts, but everywhere I look on these blogs it states it should be 7. Should I put the last quart in or run it with 6?

I'm pretty sure it's 7 as well, but if there 6 right now, you won't immediately damage your engine. Just give it a day it to to see where it adjust to. The oil level readers take a few start up cycles before they accurately read the new oil level. I'm guessing it will show +1 qt after a day or so.

The dealer won't add oil if it is showing 3/4 of the line. That used to irk me ....

DO NOT OVER FILL YOUR OIL LEVEL!

Bad thinks WILL happen if you do this. You can't drain all of the oil out of a engine when you change your oil. If you car says your oil is full after a few mile of driving it's full.

I drove the car again today it still on the Max. That is what I was afraid of , was over filling it. When I changed it I put 6 quarts in and started and check for leaks and that's when I noticed it was full without the last quart. I will keep a close eye on it!

I find it doesn't update maybe for 2 to 3 drives .
So add slowly monitor for a few drives and then add.

I think 7 quarts is for N54 with oil cooler. Might be less for your 328's motor. Anyway, I'm sure that the correct amount is stated in your manual.

why can't you follow what the indicator says... it will tell you if you need to add more. Mine asks me to add at least 1 quart between oil changes, it's normal. Just because it's 3/4 low, it won't self destruct or cause any damage.

Manuals are based on oil capacity when the engine is dry upon first fill, you can't get all of the oil removed during an oil change. Check your oil level on the 6th quart and add to full with the final quart.

Your car is just fine being 3/4 of a quart low of oil, that is why the lower limit is marked "minimum". Wait until the car is a quart low before adding oil.

Third drive it's showing down 1/4 from max. I think I'll wait until it down to 1/2 before adding any oil. Thanks

Hi! I'm new here and I have a very important question. How much oil does the 2009-11 3 series 320i suppose to take? I filled six quarts and it still is not enough and I am wondering if my sensor is wrong or something. Is this normal. Looking fwd to your responses. Thank you!
