Ess's 335d Economy Log (June 2015 update)

After reading some surprising 335d MPG figures recently, I thought I would share my own figures When I was researching this engine before I bought my car, I remember reading anything from "low 30s if you're lucky" to "easily 50 on a long cruise". That's quite a wide range...

Every time I fill up, I make a note of the mileage, litres bought, price paid, etc. on a spreadsheet that calculates MPG and theoretical miles per tank, if every last drop of diesel was used. So not data from the trip computer! I've got data since the start of 2014. It's a 2009 E92 335d remapped by Simon (E-maps) with no other powertrain modifications, now just under 80k miles, now running 19" wheels with non-RFT. Always use Shell V-Power.

I hope this is of interest to someone - I know I would have found it useful when I was researching the 335d

June 2015 Update:
> Updated post description to show latest mileage and wheels
> Added fill up data up to June 2015
> Commute change due to change of workplace - previously c. 20 miles of 1/3 town and 2/3 country roads; from now onwards about 20 miles per day of A roads and c. 1 hour per day of very bad start stop traffic :'(
> Now showing best & worst fills

35mpg, up to 38mpg on a run. It's never been better than that but it has been a lot worse (lead foot). I too keep a tracker (sad but true, no disrespect to OP) so I have an accurate (not via I drive) view of real mpg. Given I have 340bhp+ and 520lbft I'm more than happy with 35mpg

I just don't understand how it can get so low - do you exclusively drive in town in S mode? It's when seeing figures like this that I thought of making this thread. Mine has never gone lower than around 30, even on a blast

i rarely use the car to be honest, when i do its either long motorway journeys or to have some fun on the odd track day and B roads with EVO's R35's and TT RS etc...who whoop me lol but that explains the low mpg

I typically find that I drive under reads. If it shows 34mpg I invariably find that real is more like 35mpg ish

Having done a few more fill ups, I've uploaded the new data and highlighted it in the original post. I've done a bit more motorway recently which may have helped it go up a little, but still the usual journey of mainly country roads and start-stop in queues to work.

So here's another chunk of data up to March 2015 if anyone is interested. Previous average was ~39 MPG, and I'm a bit disappointed to see that has now dropped a little bit. My commute has recently seen a big increase in start-stop driving due to significantly more traffic than before, and the winter temperatures can't have helped. Traffic seems to be getting better these days, as does the temperature, so let's see if MPG starts going up a bit over the next few months!

(Table in first post updated with the new data, highlighted)

I averaged 47 mpg on the way home the other day, but mostly sits around 40mpg That's a sandard car on 17inch winters.

I wonder if bigger wheels make the economy worse? Your post made me realise that I went from 18" to 19" roughly around when the economy started to drop... Perhaps a contributing factor?

il get 570 miles to a tank on my e91 335d on a run , dont know what that works out mpg wise , driving mixed its down at 31mpg (normaly sprinted tbh) , not sure what that would work out tank wise as i never fill it as im never far from a shell station , just £30 here and there

also worth noting i only use vpower derv , and im remapped with dpf binned

ether way miles better than my 3.0d x5 was haha

To be honest Mo I've never done a full tank on just town driving so I can't say for sure, but the worst tank MPG I've ever had was 31 MPG.

Garage List
2011 BMW M3  [0.00]
iDrive reckons 36.6, Fuelly reckons 37mpg.

I find the 335d thirsty when driving round town, very thirsty.

Seems really good! Do you do a lot of motorway?

I'm surprised your OBC is so out though, mine is usually about correct.

My OBC is also correct even after the upgrades. Checked when i drove to spain and back, was within 1mpg of calculated brim to brim mpg on every fill up. Was suprised as i assumed it would overstate it

I've no idea why it's so out ? Someone mentioned it could have been because of the ramp ? It has been worse since now I come to think about it ? If I fill up, it tells me I have around 850mile range, pmsl.......

My driving is a mixture of B, A and lots of motorway, plus city driving.

I can't complain though, no other car could give me the same power and economy.
