Just replaced windshield, now cracked AGAIN!
GRRRRRRR!
Just replaced my windshield with a new OE one less than 2 weeks ago. You could, literally, still see the fingerprints of the guys who mounted it on the glass and today, while stuck in traffic, a big lorry came speeding down the other way and threw a rock right into my new windscreen, cracking it again, this time on the driver's side Now i have to start the whole insurance process again and wait for a new screen (last time it took more than 1 month for the glass to arrive) Gotta' love romanian roads

I kept my last windshield slightly chipped for over a year without cracking it again. Sure enough, as soon as i replace it, BAM!
If it were for me i'd never replace again, but my MOT is due for early next year and i must have a new (not cracked) one by then in order to pass. Besides, there's a very big "line" starting from the crack and going straight in front of my face. Quite distracting. Good part is the insurance will cover it with no cost for me. Bad part will be next year, when i'll have to renew it; having had 2 screens replaced by then, i'll surely have to pay more this time

Yeah, it was a big one.
To make things worse, just spoke to my insurer who let me know that i will have to pay 50% more when renewing next year if i have 2 damage claims. It would be cheaper to replace it myself at a Pilkington service (not OE, though). So cash out of my pocket it is, after all

Yeah, i was thinking the exact same thing - good thing it did not hit/dent the A-pillar!
Talked to my local Pilkington dealer and they quoted me ~180Euros for a new windshield, including fitting. Btw, does anyone know if the condensation sensor can be reused? I still have the old one (they replaced it at the dealer) and it seems to be glued on the windshield. Don't know if it's ok to reuse it.

Can't. The crack is aprox 20cm long (and will probably extend rapidly), right in the driver's view.

Pilkington is basically OEM glass without the BMW logo. I talked to a body shop and 2 glass companies who all independently told me the same thing. There are crappy aftermarket glass manufacturers (SafeCo I believe is one) but Pilkington is just fine. I would go that route personally. Not sure what prices are like in your area but for reference I paid around $400 for a Pilkington windshield, when BMW would have charged more than double that amount. The back glass is even more expensive, FYI.

this happened to me about a year ago. Started a new job further away and had to take the highway to get there, first day driving there rock flew up and smashed my windshield. Replaced a few weeks later (Free thanks to MA insurance laws) and then not even a week later same thing happened :-/
This one has been rock solid so far though, knock on wood! |

Sorry to hear, that was my fear after I got the Saint Gobain Sekurit BMW OEM--the next few weeks I was paranoid every time I was behind a truck or dump truck.
I thought Saint Gobain Sekurit was so great--well, I was just in Asia, and a car I rode in was Saint Gobain Sekurit TOYOTA. Like anything else, it's global...no longer implies because it's a European company that it's somehow better.... |

Right now i have 2 offers: Pilkington, @180 Euro fitted or Saint Gobain Sekurit @165E fitted.
Last WS was Saint Gobain (don't think it was sekurit). It had 2-3 little cracks in it, but they never extended outwards, even when i tried pushing on them (before replacing it). Seemed pretty solid, but can't compare it to OE one, as i only drove this one for so little. Btw, doesn't anyone know if the condensation sensor can be reused with the new WS? These prices don't include any sensors, and they're quite expensive if bought new. @Turb0Surge - did you replace your humidity/condensation sensor with your new ws? This little thing alone is 100 Euros, new:

God dammit that just sucks brother.
This is my worst fear. I just came through with a new windshield myself not too long ago. My new windshield was put in by JMK BMW in Springfield New Jersey. I wouldn't trust anyone else to do it. It is BMW OEM glass and they did an impeccable job. GEICO wanted to bullshit me and get some Safelite ghetto glass in. I know Safelite does great work but I can't trust this car to anything but BMW OEM parts. GEICO came through though, with just a 50$ difference between what I paid over my 500$ deductable. Good job GEICO! Last edited by Dark_Knight_335; 09-27-2012 at 10:15 PM.. |

That's strange. The sensors alone are worth more than $200, the price you said you paid.
Good deal

I had the lizard co. at the time and they did try to get me to do Safelite. In the end, I simply paid my deductible which was $200 and got the OEM BMW Saint Gobain Sekurit. If your deductible is $500, you should pay $500, nothing more. It's more like good job, lizard agent, for getting you to pay a little bit more. That's what you call the upsell. |
