Gentlemen I put my car through the wringer today and it came out smelling like roses! I went to MotorSport Ranch (MSR) in Cresson Texas today and ran the grueling 3.1 mile setup. I will attach a video here soon. I arrived late due to a suspension issue (Terry and Matt at Vorshlag ROCK!)- arriving at 1PM.

It was already 95 degrees outside. I ran my full Cobb tune (93 octane V2.00 map). As the day progressed, the ambient temp climbed to 100. No idea what it was on the track, likely over 115. I was using stock coolant with one bottle of mocool. I did not get any coolant temp readings. My best lap was 2:48:15, compared to spec miata time of 2:51. I ended up running 3 full 20 min sessions, fairly close together.

My highest oil temp reading was 260. It just wasn't an issue. I am sure some guys could push the car harder than I did, but I had zero cooling issues with the STETT stg II oil cooler doing its job like a MOFO! If only my brakes would have done as well!

I also did not have the heater on.

Seems like Stett is the only way to go.

As someone asked above, is there any value to removing the fog light housing on the passenger side?

I asked Stett about this. He claims there is no need to. The only possible concern is the brake ducting, maybe pull the headlight and put a duct in there.

I thought it was somewhat established that the brake ducts are useless on this car.

Very nice, congrats! Good time too, post that video whenever you can.

So you maxed out at 260F? I can live with that at 100F ambient! You're an MT though, let's see how the ATs do at that temp.

I'm heading out for a 2-day event this weekend at a track that I had limp modes consistently last year pre-OC, we'll see how it goes.
Chart updated, the aftermarket OCs are making a difference!

They're not useless if removed. See my pics a few pages back, I have direct airflow to the OC now.

Nice. Guess I will just take everything off on that side that I can.

Will have some data later this week. Track day at Willow Springs on Friday. Forecasted high of 80 degrees.

I have nitto invos on the rear but hancook v12's up front. The hancooks suck on the track. That's what you are hearing.

that explains it, thanks. I haven't heard that sound since my stock tire days :-)
What sizes are you running?

I'm thinking of bringing a set of wider rears (265) to the track this weekend to experiment, running a 245 square setup that seems to work well (for me) but I'm willing to sacrifice some balance for a slight increase in contact patch area.

245/35/19
265/30/19

I think. I really would like to get some 18 in track wheels and go a little higher profile. But let's not hijack the thread. I only posted the video to show that the car was actually driven in those temps aggressively.

I have a 335xi with no oil cooler. It's a non sports package xi. I'm a bit concerned about how much time I'll be able to run. I'd still classify myself as a beginner but tend to be a fast learner on the track.

Should I get an after market oil cooler installed before the event or should I just feel it out this time? If I have an oil cooler installed will this affect my warranty?

Thanks for any advice! Cheers.
if it's your first DE with the car, i'd stay stock for now. "if it ain't broke...." especially if you haven't driven nhis either. i will say tho, i'd temper your expectations, given the other cars you said you'd driven.

i will probably see you there tho. if you haven't driven with the boston chapter, it's a great group of guys

Yes or no on passenger side fog light removal and plastic engine cover removal for track days?

It seems the best way to stay out of limp mode at this point (at least for me) is to watch the coolant and oil temps.

At what coolant temps do you guys suggest a driver takes a cool down lap?

Nothing conclusive yet, we just started collecting coolant data. However unlike oil temps, coolant temps are quite volatile, raising and dropping several degrees Celsius between turns and straights within the same lap. If you're hitting 110C you're in trouble, I'd take it easy for a lap or 2. Turning the heater on helps.

On the component removal, someone else suggested taking off the engine cover too but no one has tried it yet, give it a try if you can. Fog light removal will trigger an error code, you'd need to deal with that.
