Brake pads/discs

Hey all,

Will be needing to change front & rear discs & pads soon. I have done some extensive searching, which has thrown up a few questions.

Firstly, the Pagid brand offered by ECP seems to get a lot of bad comments for squeeling brakes etc. They are also the cheapest.. is this just a case of cheap crap? Or do some people get away with these ok? I must admit the comments are making me want to steer clear.

Does anyone have a any comments about the textar pads/discs?

I have also looked on EBC brakes, which are similar in price for the "basic" EBC brakes (ie not yellowstuff). I find the OEM brakes more than suitable for my driving style, so not looking to upgrade as such.

Can anyone recommend anywhere else to try apart from ECP/EBC, or any other brands which are tried and tested?

Thanks for comments all.

Not sure about any of the ECP stuff, I'd probably go for the most expensive they have though. Their pagids are crazy cheap which is worrying. Look to spend £40-60, else you are probably buying junk.

Sometimes BMW genuine can be cheap, especially if you get discounts from certain dealers for buying online (15%)

As for other brands, I have some Mintex on and they seem decent, and no squeels etc.

Thanks for the comments, where did you get your mintex from? I am familiar with that brand from my past car.

Cheers

I had them fitted at a garage, but you can get them from camskill. They are around £30-40 for a full axle set of pads. A pair of discs is only £100 too, which is a lot cheaper than OEM.

You might want to consider Tarox

http://www.tarox.co.uk/

Ive just changed back to standard disks and Tarox Strada pads. Had slotted disks but although they stopped well with Brembo HP2000 pads they were noisy - a loud hum when braking hard - which eventually got on my nerves. I knew this might happen but I took a gamble.

In fact if anyone can find a use for some 348mm Mtech disks (dimpled & slotted) and/or Brembo HP2000 pads that have done 6000 miles then PM me.

Very good. Several times Ive braked hard to a near standstill and the hazard lights have been activated by the car itself. I dont know what the actual trigger is but it might be the rate of deceleration and the fact the car stops, as crashed cars tend to stop eventually.

I have ebc grooved & dimpled with yellow stuff pads on mine & kind of wish I'd gone for oem only down to the noise you hear of the dimples when window is slightly down.

What about the regular ebc pads/discs? Sure they will be ok and probably no more noise than oem!

Think you went for the GD type discs with grooved. EBC actually say there's a bit more noise with these.

The USR discs (ultimax) are slotted and just as quiet as OEM. I'll be getting USR's and yellows fitted next week can't wait!
