Need hubcentric rings? Vibration issues on winter set...
I have 16x7 Rial Salerno w/ Blizzak lm 25 RFTs for my winter setup 205/55R16. They have about 10k miles on them. Ever since I put them on this year, I have been getting vibrations and "pulsing" or "whooshing" noise from the front end above 40mph. I have had the tire shop balance them twice now, but I still get this noise/vibration. It is most noticeable on freshly paved smooth roads (a rarity, I know). The rims have been checked for bends and they check out ok.
Then it occurred to me - do these wheels need hubcentric rings? If not, what could be going on to cause this problem? The Blizzaks don't seem to be worn unevenly - and this seems different than the typical "winter tire roar". The normal noise from the snow tires is louder, but more constant. The vehicle was aligned in august, and they claim the suspension is fine despite a squeak from the sway bar bushings that happens rarely. I guess I could have it looked at again.. Are RFT Blizzaks prone to the same cupping issues at the Turanzas and Potenzas? I am running 33/36 psi. My car is an 06 e90 325i w/ ZSP. thoughts? ideas? Driving me bonkers... The version we sell does not use hub rings in 16" so I would suspect that the vibe is coming from the tires. A shop with a Hunter Road Force balancer should be able to diagnose it.

OK I am gonna take it to a different place to have them look at it again and possibly re-balance. I noticed they used the lug nuts from my summer OEM wheels when they installed the Rials this time (as opposed to the lugs that came with the Rials), would that make a difference?

The different lugs should not make a difference.

Unless the new wheels require ball seats?

The car was at the dealer for something else and I mentioned this issue to them. They claim that the tires have "choppy" wear on the sides and this is what is causing the noise. I asked the tire installer to look for this when they put them on this season and they didn't say anything. I guess I'll see when I pick it up. The tire issues on this car are driving me nuts. Assuming this is the issue, is it even possible to have an e90 that doesn't cause uneven tire wear on the front?

Those wheel have the same seating as OE. Glad you found that the issue was not wheel related, but sorry to hear about your uneven tire wear.
