Those new VXRs don't seem to be putting out quite the figures you'd expect for the bhp and torque - thinking back to the magazine drag race between one and a RS250 megane and the megane dusted it!

Autocar tested the 0-60mph at 6.4secs and 0-100mph in 16.5secs which isn't that fast for the power. It did match the Focus RS time on the track though. The one with 320bhp managed 0-60mph in 5.9secs which is claimed for standard. Autocar questioned if hot hatchbacks had hit the development cul-de-sac and pointed out that with thousands spent on tuning the M135i was still appreciably faster. Autocar have the M135i tested at 4.0secs 30-70mph for comparison. Here is autocar figure. |

I have a 330i and think its great. Does not have the same low down grunt, but revs to 7k sounds great. Is smooth and reliable and does around 27mpg in the real world.
I would also consider a mk5 golf gti edition 30. Holds its value well, better to drive then s3 and quick. Supposed to have around 215bhp, but has s3 engine that is supposed to be detuned but in reality has around 250bhp. Will give over 30mpg in real world and chipped will give we'll over 300bhp. Get one with heated cow

After posting i had a read up on the 8p s3, someone (with more technical genuis than me) has calculated max speed possible etc etc. His belief was that 181mph was V max with standard gearbox, and that would require around 400bhp. Lots of people with mapped s3's hitting the 155-160 mark though. |

we have one, and if you can see past the mediocre build quality compared to bmw then they are excellent, apart from the poor standard seats and headlights. Depends on your budget but a 60 plate with 10/15 000 miles is low/mid teens from a dealer. i watched Chris Harris compare the m135 With an S3 and the S3 didn't rate well, but not sure how objective it was and if you are looking at the same model year, just an impression he already disliked the S3 before starting. |
