I wonder how long would it take for Teleatlas to have a new version of the DVD for the previous navi generation (2006-2008). I guess their focus would be on the new HDD based systems.

My car came with the 2005 version and I upgraded to the 2008 version when it became available in late 2007. My plans were to upgrade again in 2010 to the 2011 version. My current DVD is quickly becoming obsolete (mainly POI's, not so much streets - luckily).

Pirating is generated more because of unreasonable prices for software, not simply getting it "free." $199 for an update is very unreasonable. I have lifetime updates for my Nuvi and paid a one time fee of $129. Deterring pirating is much improved by charging reasonable/competive prices.

Agree with you that "deterring pirating is much improved by charging reasonable/competive prices".

At the end of the day, we all have options - and if don't agree with someone's price we should get an alternative. Just grabbing a pirated copy is wrong.

If we agree with piracy and we justify it, then we should agree and justify many other crimes. Most criminals would always have a "reason" as to why they commited a felony.

BMW will always charge higher prices for an update as compared to Nuvi because they have us. (it's like the same reason concesion stands charge an arm and a leg for food and drinks at stadiums - but you have the option of eating before the game - smuggling stuff would be wrong). But that doesn't justify piracy.

I don't think BMW is too blame for the ridiculous pricing. With my Acura, I had to pay the same crazy $199 for updates. I paid that money directly to Alpine though (the source for the Acura NAV) so Acura did not make money.

That is pretty much the going price.

Personally, I don't plan to update and will rely on BMWAssist for my searches. I'd rather pay the $199 a year and get the extra features.

I guess spending $100 on a copy that someone else pirated and is passing off as genuine is easier on the conscience than pirating it yourself?

For the longest time the link was dead. Now at least it's a proper page with an 'Under Construction' message. And note this site is run by TeleAtlas and not BMW.
It is working now! Price: $199
