When are you putting your winter wheels on?

Just wondering when will you guys start putting your winter wheels on?

And please feel free to share your ride with winter wheels on if you have already done it.

I'm waiting on mine coming.

My rears are about done, so I'll change over soon. It has been pretty cold up here in Aberdeen.

My car will look the same as I'll still be on the same wheels.

Garage List
Waiting for daytime temperatures consistently below 7 degrees, which is the temp at which winter tyres come into their own...

Set a date

Mine are going on December 3rd, when I estimate my car will be due its first oil & filter service. I usually pick the first week of December to switch, off again March 15th

You'll have to be careful with your 335i then.

Sounds logical to me. Keeping OEM wheels and just change the rubber. It will not suit 313s though.
Good luck and keep us posted how it goes mate.

330d/335d are wild animals especially remapped one (due to excessive torque and sudden surge of torque). I think winter tyres are must for 6 pots or driver very carefully.

Awaiting for the photos of new wheels then.

Interesting approach. I think I will have to do the same thing.
It was -2 here and 2 in the morning so thought to put my winters wheels on.

However reading the comment above, I will wait for the correct temperature.

I have a dilemma

Fit 225/40/18 winters to the rear (9" so may be a bit of a stretch)
Fit 255/35/18 winters (correct size but expensive)
Or fit normal 255/35/18's to the rear

Hmmmmmm

Surely the 7 degrees relates to ground temperatures though?

Usually would be putting them on now, last few years halloween was generally the switch. But with the mild winter down in surrey last year they did not go on until December 10th and where off again end of Jan. NO point putting on if the average temp are way above 7c as you dont get any benefit from them quite the opposite. Last year got caught out on a long journey and a warm temp the car felt like it was swimming at 70mph. If the weather carries on like it is now they will be staying off

Are you saying fit normal rubber on rear and change the fronts to winter tyres?

Shaun I had 4 pot previously and it was fine during the winter time (if I was careful). Never driven it in snow though!

And what does she use? Beamer

On a serious note, I will be using a smaller car.

But BMW on winter tyres VS standard car with standard wheels....
Who would you pick?

No i need new rears anyways so dont know what to fit

Normal 255/35/18
Winter 255/35/18 (expensive though)
Or squeeze 225/40/18 winters on the 9" wide rears (will it look stupid / cheaper though)

You've probably got more Torque than me. So go easy if your not on the winters yet

I'm on Hankooks. They are good in the wet. Probably not too bad in the cold as well. Yes no comparison to a true winter tyre. Luckily I'm close to the office and there's a train that takes about 10 mins.

public train vs 335i though. I'll get to work in the 335i, even if it has to be sideways, before I force myself to use the train.

If you go for winter wheels on rear, you will have to change them to normal rubber during summer time otherwise they'll wear quickly.

You are correct to some extent re: Torque. When I was looking for decent rubber to go on Ispiri wheels, I followed recommendations of 335i drivers and what they use.
I bought some decent rubber (not the best) and I was told that grip is excellent in any weather. On a remapped 330d, they struggle to hold the grip especially when massive torque kicks in (observed through NBT torque monitor).

I think we can put the car into auto and start driving in 2nd gear to avoid any slipping on ice (if it goes to that stage). However going uphill is still a different story and youtube is full of bmw videos showing what we encounter during winter.

Now going back to your daily commute, I would do the same and take 335i.
You can be as careful as you can but what about other drivers?
Last year (or the year before) mega's car was hit by a nice chap who could not control his car and hit his car.
So no matter how much money you put into your car (winter tyres etc etc) and driver carefully, there are awesome people out there to hit our cars.

I think better approach is to use second car if we can and if we have.
