Splice Brake Sensor Wire
For those of you running aftermarket brake pads or brake kits do you keep the brake sensor or unplug it? I replaced the rear/ front OEM pads for cool carbon pads. Unfortunately, the rear sensor was "done" and I am getting the yellow "brake" light and yellow "car on lift light" replace rear pads. I assume both are from the brake sensor circuit being broken causing a "short". If unplugging the sensor doesn't clear the error, what about cutting the sensor and connecting the two wires from the sensor to restore the short. Any problem with doing that? I will buy a new sensor soon but this will function as a quick fix if it works. Any suggestions?

Lol...why wouldn't you replace the sensor to begin with?

You have to replace the sensor then reset it thru the on board computer for the Brake light and car on lift to disappear.

my rotoras didn't have space for the brake sensors so took my old sensors and cut the wire about 1 inch from the plug and shorted the wires together. soldered it and pluged the plug back in. cleared my pad error.

If the sensor is still good you won't get any error lights whether it is plugged in or not. A buddy of mine has his unplugged, zip-tied up since the BBK he installed had no place for it and no errors were displayed.

you can probably short it out. but the way these cars are designed it may be a little mroe difficult than that. cut the old wire and see how many there are and how the plastic piece is designed to work

I must say, this is a very sore subject for me. BMW makes the sensors so that they "self destruct" 1000 miles before the service warning gets to zero, and in my case, with around 20% actual brake pad left. I cannot be certain on the E90, but on our E60, you just short the connector. It's bad enough that you have to scour Youtube to find out how to reset all of the warnings, but they add insult to injury by making you replace the sensors (or short them) BEFORE the warning gets to zero.
I did my rears last year, just did the fronts today. Did a full brake bleed also. |

money is money, and my 6 year old car is not a $50k car. It was only half that much 3 years ago when we bought it. I do my own work, and putting a $25 sensor every time you replace a $50 set of pads is bad economics.
I check my hardware often (20 years of road race background). Running out of pads on vacation isn't going to happen, and if it did... I'd change them in the parking lot of Advance. A "sensor" for a wear item should never be a wear item......... |
