P0597 Thermostat code
Hi all, fairly new to the BMW world.
Ran the OBD scanner on the car (325i) and got the following code: P0597 - GenericTypePowertrain - Vehicle Speed, Idle Control, and Auxiliary Inputs - ISO/SAE Controlled Description: Thermostat Heater Control Circuit/Open Ive run some searches and it seems when the thermostat control fails, it fails open to reduce chance of overheating. Anyone experience this, and if so, is it a certain thermostat replacement? Appreciate your feedback. |

Actually, reading this thread: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=797548 It seems that the car takes longer to warm up, and there is an issue with emmissions. Not critical, but needs to be done. It's still under statuatory warranty, so I hope it's covered... guess I'll be calling the dealership. |

People actually have been replacing their factory thermostats with the aftermarket BMS thermostat. What this does is force the thermostat to stay open all of the time, kind of like your broken thermostat. It results in mildly longer warm up times but also reduced operating temperatures.
Whether this is beneficial or detrimental to the engine, the jury appears to be out. There are a few threads of this mod in the 1addicts Australia and exhaust mods sections.

No probs!
Though having a think about it, I'm not entirely sure whether you are talking your water/coolant thermostat or your oil thermostat. I assumed oil and the thermostat replacement I was referring to is for the oil thermostat. Though I guess even if it is your water thermostat and it's kept open like the oil one it would have basically the same effect. |

I had the engine light come on while driving one day, stressed me out... then it went out a couple hundred K's later... then came on et.al...
Had the codes read while I was in Sydney and got the P0597 code, same as you... Turns out, the connectors on the thermostat heater can go a little soft and don't grip the pins as hard as they should. I simply unplugged the connector from the back of the thermostat heater and re-plugged it a couple times... viola, cleared the codes and never had the problem re-appear. |

If it stuck on open, then it will just take longer for it to warm up. Only emmision related. Not much harm done to the engine.
The thing is, you never when it's going to decide to move again and stop at close position. |
