Most would recommend 17s for winter. I used oem 18s and have 225/40/18 on all 4 bridgestone blizzak lm60. Never got stuck with our few days of snow fall in vancouver (including unpaved hills) with my 328i

I'm a big fan of Michelins. I have Pilot Alpin PA3s on my E91. Never liked the Blizzaks as much when I had them on my E90.

I would definitely recommend non run-flats, and nothing bigger than 17".

I got an 18" set of these this year. Best winter tires I've had by far.

I'm running 225/45/17 dunlop winter sport m3 dsst and it has been flawless for the past 3 years. Excellent in the dry, wet, and even deep snow. Been up to blue a dozen times and they have never failed me.

Those are awesome tires. Had them on my Touareg -- it was unstoppable in snow and ice.

We are running the Hankook I*cept on the D; they are not bad so far! They are great in the dry, and decent in the snow. Its hard to tell with all that torque on the D

Studs are illegal in most places. That's why I went with the "R".

I am running them on 18s; no major issues, went though couple snow storms with common sense driving, though I think 205 on 17th will be a safer bet.

You can use them without the studs, like me.

I've been running Continental TS810S RFT winters on style 162 reps for the last two winters and have been happy with them.

+100. These (Nokian Hakkapeliitta R) are the best winter tires I have ever had. Make my old Michelin Pilot Alpins feel like oil covered slicks. Heck, they are from Finland, who knows more about snow? Still not as good as my wife's Michelin Xice 2, although the Xice suck on dry pavement (super squishy). If you plan on driving on real snow, I highly recommend these.

I live in Calgary and have a Sunshine Village season pass. I drive 140k each way, every weekend, in a 335i (no xDrive) with Dinan Stage 2 (380hp). My ski buddy insists we take my 335, not his Tundra, unless there is more than 6 inches of snow on the roads.

PS - hakkas are the #1 choice of the local ice racer crowd too.

I have no problem running the hankcook Winter i*cept Evo with M5 17s rims, very quiet on dry and wet pavement as well as very good traction on snow.
