Audio - Basic questions

Morning chaps,

I'm completely new to BMW audio so I apologise for the basic questions. I've tinkered around with cars in the past, but never with the BMW.

It's an e92 and I have the Pro iDrive (CCC - old version) with the basic speaker set up.

My questions are:

1- Can I add the under seat subs to my current set up? Will these need coding, or can I just wire them up?

2- If I was to change the door speakers, are these a straight swap or will they require coding too?

3 - Would you recommend an amp if I was to upgrade, or would the standard system be good enough?

There's plenty of information out there, but I'm a little confused with all the 'coding' requirements. So if someone could clear this up, it would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

I had a look a few weeks ago and I wasn't able to see any. However, maybe I need to take another look when I give her a clean this weekend.

I think all cars have the under seat subs. You can add tweeters in the front doors very easily/cheaply.
The best VFM upgrade is the Alpine upgrade.

Thanks. If I was to upgrade to the alpine upgrade, is this a straight swap or do I need to get things coded in?

I have the same setup as urs.. I have ordered my stuff and waiting to be delivered.
I am answering ur questions from what I know, and not what I have done (in due time)..

1. Your basic setup is waaay underpowered to add any aftermarket subs.. You will need an amp. (You should be having underseat 'woofers'. (they aint subs) ).
2. Door speakers are straight swaps. But watch out for mounting depths. you should be fine with anything under 42mm.
3. Go for a 4 or 6 channel amp. I went for the JL Audio xd600/6. Small amp which should fit in the OEM amp location (left side of trunk).

You do not need coding if you are just swapping the speakers or adding an amp (since yours is a base stereo setup). However, when adding an amp, it is strongly recommended to recode your HU to Hifi, which will hive a flat cleaner signal to your aftermarket amp. To avoid coding and still achieve a flat signal you can also use a DSP like the MS8.

Hope this helps.
Please also correct me if I am wrong..

Alpine upgrade is a retrofit, and needs coding.

I believe that on pre-2010 cars it's straight upgrade with no coding required.
