Surprised that this hasn't been raised as a bigger issue in the community.
Had a small leak in the oil pan and just got the gaskets replaced today. BMW SA also advised that there is also slow weeping in the Oil Filter Housing gasket and the tensioner also needs replacing. It sounds like these are now common issues (both the oil leak and the tensioner) to consider when you reach 96,000 miles (unless the bolt breaks first). Thanks for everyone's feedback so far. I would have thought it was just my car if I didn't see this thread. BTW I have a 2006 E90 330i MT with 155,000 km (96,300 miles).

housing gasket is still good on mine *crosses fingers*. oil pan is starting to weep, but not bad enough to be worth fixing yet. tensioner was on its way out and was squeaking.
144k miles for me |

I want to replace the entire tensioner/belt setup (doesn't look difficult by any means) but absolutely terrified that the bolt holding the tensioner will snap when trying to undo/remove it.

Yep this is a common issue. Sometimes the bolt breaks, but should be pretty easy to remove because they stretch and are really loose. Then the tensioner also bends. Sometimes one or the other, sometimes both at the same time. Happened to my car and I didn't notice it till the belt shredded and pieces flew into my turbo and chipped the front wheel. So ended up buying a tensioner, bolt, belt, and turbo compressor wheel. Was not a happy camper.

Hate to revive an older thread, but I'm at a loss here..
I purchased a tensioner pulley and an idler pulley. Everything shipped together as a set, belt included. I installed all components, and when it comes to routing the belt everything fits snug and how it's supposed to, but I can't seem to get the belt on the tensioner pulley...there isn't enough give on the belt. I did not pull the pin out either... What could I be doing wrong ? |

Isn't it supposed to ship pre tensioned and you don't release it until you have the belt aligned? You will need a T60 torx bit on a breaker bar preferably with a friend helping you. And please check and re-check the alignment of the belt so it doesn't rub.

This may be my fix. I was worried about pullling the pin since everyone said leave it in until the belt is on and everything is aligned. I guess I'll pull the pin and see if I can apply enough tension with the breaker bar to get the belt on.

Wait! It should fit with the pin in! Male sure you are putting the belt on properly and make sure you have the correct belt. Make sure the tensioner is installed correctly. Double check everything.

I double and triple checked to make sure it's the right belt and that the routing of the belt is correct. Everything is in place but it just won't fit on to the tensioner with the pin in place. I need the tensioner pulley moved back at least another 2 inches in order to get the belt on...

It is an aftermarket belt, but it came with the kit. This is the second belt that I've tried putting on that's giving me the same fitment issue. I will take a few pictures when I get home from work to show you guys what it currently looks like and how far off I am...

I'll double check and make sure that I have all the slack out of the belt and that the grooves sit where they are supposed to. I cannot think of anything else it could possibly be. Is the belt really supposed to go on the pulley as easily as people on the DIY videos make it seem?

Yes. I think if:
A) the tensioner is installed correctly (pretty much has to be) B) the belt is the right length then pretty much the only other possibility is the belt isn't seated correctly or isn't routed correctly. |

Easy easy DIY job, just make sure you get a long breaker bar to hold the tensioner as you slip the belt on and off it doesn't lock like some other cars.
I would also use a torque wrench on the bolt and use a new one, but I know a lot of guys here don't. |
