looks like fun...cant believe its designed to launch at 5k rpms!!!!
I couldnt get traction w/ anything higher than a 3k feathered clutch launch on the street.

Sniz,
Seems to hold some traction until it gets to 20 mph and then its loses it. Only just started to play with it so will take a more detailed look at in the future to see exactly whats happening. Dougie. |

You can clearly hear the car rev up, then it bogs down upon launch as the ECU pulls back the power, then it releases the power a bit, allowing too much wheelspin, then because of that it pulls to much power and bogs briefly again, then it finally takes off. I don't see how this "launch control" is beneficial in attaining optimum acceleration. You'd be much better off just brake boosting it yourself and learning to press the pedal down quickly and smoothly to get the best launch with a tiny bit of wheelspin at the start and then the tires just on the edge of breaking loose. But then, I'm not sure if DCT tranny allows the brake boosting. But good to see it can take the power of a tuned 335i Last edited by Driver72; 04-30-2009 at 12:59 PM.. |

Here’s some data from non and launch control launches. The launch control launches are from the video’s. Hopefully there of some interest as you can actually see what’s happening.

Seems I was right on target with my suspicions and thoughts about LC acceleration results.
Graph #3 is a thing of beauty and as it should be with no launch control and a perfectly executed driver applied acceleration run. Nice smooth throttle application (up to the point where it looks as if the driver let up off the throttle) and nice smooth acceleration increase to match. Then with launch control, as I suspected based on the sound of the engine during that video.... Erratic rpm bouncing up and down too much and therefore erratic acceleration, resulting in much slower acceleration times. Interesting, thanks. BTW, by chance do you have the gear ratios for the DCT as well as the final drive ratio? |

So, the LC on the 335i DCT actually makes it slower than if brake launching? If so, then what's the point of the LC then and why did BMW incorporate it with the DCT tranny? Is the BMW E90/92 M3 DCT slower when the LC is engaged as well?

Now that's a launch control with that Vette.
It should equal if not better the best a driver can do with modulating the throttle, and that in fact is exactly what it did. As usual though, it's yet another step to taking away any skill a driver needs these days. Can you imagine the younger kids now who've only grown up driving cars with launch control, stability control, and all that jumping into a performance car from 10 years ago and seeing how well they can do at a track (straight or curvy). We could take bets as to how quickly they'd be in the run offs. Wonder what GM will be selling the 2010 Vettes for now that they are desperate for money. $2k under invoice maybe? |
