Ive heard its very good on the whole. The only negative i heard was from an owner who said he wished he'd gone for a manual ex post facto due to lack of feel and driver interaction but im not entirely sure what he meant by that other than the car changes gear for you but then thats the nature of the beast!!?? If im honest, having had both SMGII M3's and CSL's, i would have gone for DCT on mine - but it would have cost me at least another £6-£8k more for the spec that i chose and in my colour - so i went for manual. You obviously need to test drive one.

Personally it would be the car id go for. I prefered the SMG in the old M3 also over the manual.

But to be fair, ive not driven any E92 M3 and only a SMG equipped E46 M3.

DCT M3 have got into the 12's over the 1/4mile. Manuals mid-low 13's.

yawn....

free hand for eating food / making calls whilst driving and easy on the leg when sitting in traffic jams i suppose. 414bhp to power the aircon on a hot day too!

just what a new M3 is ALL about to the main buying demographic.

LOL!! Have to say i am really happy to be back in a manual car again, thought i would seriously regret not spending the extra on DCT having come from the CSL and the 997 Tip, but its so much nicer being back in control of when the car changes gear, esp coming into and out of roundabouts and on the twistys etc - i also love being able to blip the throttle on the down shift and when driving through the Blackwall Tunnel!!!! Its gonna be even more fun when i get my Race exhaust fitted!!!!

Awesome piece of kit. Versatile. Automatic and manual mode many times better than smg III.

And Lanuch control....

DCT is a clever bit of kit. The only bad thing I've heard is some have experienced problems downshifting and the gear not changing when requested. I'm sure a software update will soon fix this though

That issue was fixed with a software update a few months ago. The only minor bug that remains is a slight delay and hesistation in accelerating after slowing down. This is rumoured to be fixed in another software update coming very soon.

Depends on what you want the vehicle for.

Manual will always win for me in a spirited drive or trackwork.

But as an everyday car the versatility of these dsg boxes is hard to match.

perfect auto mode, and throttle blips like a true prof heelntoer.

oh and the dct is faster than the manual.

How do you find the SMG box is the M6 ? Do you think you'd prefer the car with a manual box, or do you find the SMG well suited to the type of car it is? I've always been in two minds about the SMG - when you're cracking on, it's a good bit of kit... but when not driving at 10/10ths, I find it so frustratingly irritating!

I personally didnt particularly like the SMGII in my E46 M3's - but in the CSL it was simply sublime and the throttle blip on the downshifts gave me a permanent hard on, which was embarrassing when i had to stop for fuel!! I drove the DCT in the E92 M3 and liked it but wanted to go with the manual this time as i couldnt really warrant the extra cost. Residuals will be better on the DCT cars.

The SMG gearbox splits opinion.

I love the smg box. However you have to learn how to drive one. It is compromised as an auto, but if driven sedatley its ok for when you cant be arsed. Put the smg in s6 with dsc of and it changes gear between 60-80 millisecs and it makes a big difference to acceleration. If you feather the throttle slightly on change up the changs can be velvety smooth. The blip on downshifts is perfect, and does it alot better than i could do in a manual.

Have a look at this video of M6 vs 997 turbo from driversrepublic the results are suprising but it demonstartes the effect of the fastest setting on the smg. Please watch all the video.

ive tried to embed it but im a bit thick

Good vid. I fackin love the M6.

But the M6 didnt start to pull untill 150mph. (Indicated) on the first run.

2nd run was good and the third run it still didnt pull away till wel over 130-140. (Guestimation)

Ive been in a passenger from rest to 150mph and it was like a fuckin rocket ship.

Like he said, from a standing start the turbo would walk it majorly. But rolling, 4wd eats power.

i think what the vid shows is that run one the turbo got the jump and that was it, but the smg box was only on s5 not s6.

Then JB puts the smg to full speed s6 and the m6 is as fast as the tubo and pulls away.

Im not diminishing the greatness of the turbo at all, as its an awesome car. but had the m6 been derestricted it would defo show the 997 its tail pipes.

from a standing start i agree it would be a different story, but meeting a turbo on a duel carriageway or motorway the 997 driver would be like ' what the fuck'

M6 is properly fast there cannot be any doubters.

Still might get a 997TT though

Manual vs DCT

100% personal perference

The DCT cars will be worth a grand or two more on resale but then they cost 2.5k more to start off with

+1 and its not as smooth as everyone think it is, as there is still the jerks when you are downshifting hard from test driving it. Also cannot justify the harsh extra costs over a manual

Hi,
DCT on the 335i goes like this:
1/ Start up from cold. Sometimes it acts like the old six speed and moves without the brake being applied. On other days it won't move until the accelerator is applied (more often than not). Is this the same as the M3?
2/ During normal driving you are sitting at say 60 in 7th gear and then you floor the accerlerator. What happens is the revs immediately jumps from 2000 to 6500 revs approx and then it changes into 4th or 3rd a second later. Feels like forever. Does ths happen with the M3?
3/ Does anyone else have a DCT 335i as I can't get the launch control to work?
4/ Apart from the above can't really see much of a difference from the six speed box.

Dougie.

Bloody hell Dougie, im glad i bought my M3 in manual now - if i'd bought the DCT and it did that when i floored the throttle i'd be straight back to dealer and demanding it be swapped for a manual!! Ive a feeling the M3 DCT box is slightly upgraded than whats in the 335 - but i could be wrong?? Does the launch control do as much long term damage as the old E46 M3's ie, you are only advised to use it a max of 3 times!!???
