Where to live in Charleston, SC?
Coming down from Boston for a visit in 2 weeks to look for a place to rent. After this crazy winter and my rent going up, I figured I could live someplace warmer for less. I can work from anywhere so there is no advantage of being in Massachusetts.
Are there any specific areas I should check out? Suggestions? I see a lot of people living in Mount Pleasant, should I look there? Thanks! |

Mount Pleasant is going to be a little more expensive on average.
James Island is nice and close to everything, even West Ashley is a good location as well. If you don't mind being a little further away from things Johns Island is growing, and maybe cheaper to live there. I guess the cheapest would be North Charleston and Summerville, but traffic is pretty bad and North Charleston has some not so great areas... |

Yeah I think you could live pretty much anywhere around Charleston pretty comfortably for that amount of money. I do not live in Charleston anymore, but I think you will find that everything is going to be a good deal less expensive down here.

The Avondale area in west Ashley is a good area for walking distance to bars/restaurants. Most houses are older but have been renovated. Downtown is full of homes and apartments and close to everything (shops, bars, restaurants ) but parking is a pain and roads are horrible! James island is a good central location but traffic gets bad during the summer months and rush hour traffic. I would stay out of north charleston, Summerville area. Prices are much cheaper but it's a little ghetto imo. Mt. Pleseant is nice, lots of new development, prices are higher though.

Daniel Island. You should be able to get a nice 2 bedroom apartment for about $2k a month. I lived there for a year before buying a house. My one bedroom was $1275/mo. At the time a 2 bedroom was about $1700 but I'm sure it's gone up in the last few years.
Daniel Island is a VERY nice community, quiet and close to Mount P and Isle of Palms as well as not far from downtown. I plan to move back there soon and buy a house. Summerville and Goose Creek have some very nice areas as well, but a little farther out. Goose Creek does have some ghetto areas but Crowfield Plantation is very nice and has a golf course. |

Depends what you want.
I live up in summerville real close to north charleston, super nice quiet neighborhood. Not to far from downtown(20 minutes), maybe 35 to the beach... I like being further from the busy stuff so i can relax and it be quiet while at home. Daniel island/downtown is going to be most expensive Mt pleasant/west ashley are going to be next James island next Then summerville/north chas But if you're paying 2k a month you can live anywhere in charleston for that haha |

Where to live.....
I live in North Charleston in a cool area called Park Circle. It is convenient to West Ashely, North Charleston, Mt. Pleasant and Downtown. I am in sales/operations so I need to be on an interstate in minutes. I live at a one year old complex called The Flats at Mixson. Check it out! Good rates and amenities.

Ladson area isn't bad either. Can rent standalone houses 3-4 bedroom for about 1600/mo.
