Check DPF soot level

I'm considering buying an E90 325d with 60K and was wondering if there is anyway to check the DPF soot level for some sort of indication as to how far through its life the DPF is. I know this can be done on VAG cars but not sure about BMW's. I have access to GT1/DIS and INPA.

Thanks.

It's not the soot so much it's the ash which is none regenerative. I could see my dpf on a snap on machine showing its service life was on about 52% till I removed it fully! So I would think you can check it on a diagnostic equiptment for a bmw

Dis allows you to measure the back pressure of the exhaust gas at different rev ranges and compares the values with the maximum allowed thereby giving an indication of remaining dpf life.

Thanks for the replies guys however is there a definitive process to check this. I'm not sure I would be able to interpret the exhaust gas readings.

Also is it possible to perform a forced regen via GT1/DIS or INPA?

I'm sure you can, I can do it on a snap on machine! You mainly need to see its remaining service life. If it has I drive then use the service indicator it should show it, if not it might have been me using my machine when I seem it. Soots not an issue it's the ash, which is a calculation by the engine ecu.

This will point you in the right direction

I can't remember the exact menu options in DIS but you can definitely force a regen and check the condition of the DPF by measuring the backpressure and comparing it with maximum allowed.

My DPF was showing it needed replacing in 14,000 miles in January. I have since covered 18,000 miles, the backpressures measured on my DPF were minimal compared with maximum allowed. I reset the CBS for the DPF and it has been showing a life of 120,000 miles for the past 12000 miles. I have since re-measured the backpressures in case the first readings were a fluke - but they weren't. Another poster advised that the maximum backpressure allowed before a warning light is triggered can be doubled with no ill effect by reprogramming the ECU. I can't vouch for this.

Thanks for that, will the max backpressure be displayed in DIS? And is it just hook up to DIS and rev to 2000/4400 for the corresponding readings?

In short. Yes. It will automatically set the revs for all but the cut-off (4000) measurement and then display actual and max backpressure for each reading.
