Why are the English so bitter against him?

Reading other forums it is nothing short of embarrassing.

It is like primary school bullying.

I do believe it was all the comments he made about being Scottish and not British. I believe he has also made several comments in the Scottish Independence discussion (for obviously).

So as he sees himself as Scottish and wants people to see him as Scottish (and absolutely not British) why would the English warm to him?

And didn't he also say once that the Wimbledon fans were "embarrasing", I think referring to the so-called "Henman Hill".

He's got a very good point and I agree 100% but it's not going to win him many friends.

He is Scottish. What is wrong with being proud of where you are from?

Does it justify the horrendous abuse?

I don't remember any negative English comments other than when an English journalist was joking with him about Scotland not qualifying for a tournament then asked who he would support. His response in context of the joke was anyone but England.

The media made him out to be really bitter.

Think he is going to be daft enough to slate the English publically?

Absolutely nothing wrong with being proud of where you come from but if he then goes on to say that he'll "support anyone but England" then I'm quite happy to reciprocate and be glad that Federer took him apart and left him blarting on the turf.

I think they should have a “sports dullard personality of the year” He’d win, closely second would be Steven Gerrard

He is the best UK tennis player for generations. He is in the top 4 in the world.

Unfortunately it says a lot about this country, and in particular the media, that he is not celebrated more.

Yesterday was an excellent match, won by the better player on the day.

Murray played very well for 1 3/4 sets......and was very gracious and honest in defeat.

He is to be congratulated imo.

Admittedly Andy isn't my favourite player, the things he has said were stupid but said many years ago, he has obviously done a lot of growing up since.

His speech yesterday has certainly won him more support, but his tennis won't, it's still the same old Murray.

Federrer has a fearless game, prepared to take calculated risks on the bigger point to go get the win.
Murray sits back and hopes it will all be ok, which it can be against those outside the top four but never against, nadal, djokvic, federrer. If Murray wants a grand slam he must play more aggressive tennis on the big points.
Check out the unforced error count... Not many from Andy so keeping the ball in....A lot more from federrer because he wants to bury the opposition.

As a Scot I felt proud watching him and feel he made a good account of himself. Federrer hardly took him apart despite the fact he is most likely the best player that the sport has EVER seen. He's like an unstoppable, unemotional tennis robot when he's on it which is about 90% of the time.

Scotland have been nationally hating the English in sporting events for years, it's become a sport in itself. It's only fair the English now return the sentiment. Besides, I'm quite sure Andy Murray really could not give a 2 fucks if the English support or like him.

Im English but am a Murry fan, was gutted for him yesterday. I like the fact he's proud of his heritage.
Hopefully this will be the catalyst for a new Murray

Yeah but if a Scotsman makes a negative comment about for instance, the English football team we and just bitter and jealous.

I've never seen so much hate filled posts on forums I use about any sport and certainly never as personal.

I find it embarrassing.

The way they fall over like they've been shot anytime another player comes near them. Then they all have a bath together after, what's that all about?

Have I got the right sport?

Can't stand patriotism in sport at all. All this national hype about sporting events is just a marketing gimmic for the working class flag wavers.

Can't people just enjoy the game and support players for their flare and skill rather than their nationality?

I think that might be football you're thinking of which is probably worse.
