Emission With Catless DP's

As I promised myself, I would get a FMIC or/and catless DP's by December (which is only a couple of months away). I am still hesitant in getting catless downpipes because of the emission reason.

My question is has anyone passed emission with catless downpipes?

I would be stunned of you could pass a Colorado front range dyno/sniffer test W/O the cats.

edit: out here in the boonies there's no emissions testing...heh heh.

That's a good question Alfred. If you only do the dp's and don't replace the secondary cats you could be ok. I get no crazy rotten egg smell with my AR catless dp's. Just hoping that it passes emissions. I have read that folks in Cali have passed with the same setup and CARB restrictions are quite a bit more stringent. I hope to not have my car by the time I need an emissions test anyway which will be 2010.

+1. You should be okay as you still will retain your secondaries with DP's.

If you still have the secondary cats, just make sure you go in with a well warmed up vehicle and you should be fine. From what I have read, the secondary are really the primaries, where the cats in the downpipes are just a pre-cat to help with emissions on cold starts.

Cats work best when hot, so the harder you have ran the car before the emission test the better off you will be. Don't turn the car off if you are waiting in line.

If you have no cats, you won't pass. The testing centers in the metro area do a visual check along with the dyno test. They won't be able to see no cats in the downpipes, but they will probably notice if you do not have any cats. Nice thing is you don't have to worry about O2 sims too much here because they don't hook up to OBD2 or anything like that.

I wish we could find out for sure whether we can pass emission with catless downpipes....

Vincent, that may not work with these people in Broomfield

It did at one point. Alfred, if your worried about not passing emissions, they give you a second shot free. If you fail for not having cats, then install your stock DP's and take it again. You get 2 tries if you don't pass.

That's still over a year away. Just do it! I'll probably have to get e-test before then.

Well I don't want to buy catless DP's if I have to uninstall/install them each time I need to get the emission done. When do you have to get your emission done?

I'm due to plate renewal but didn't check to see if I needed emissions. I'll go home and check.

It's easy to know - If you bought your car used, you have to get your emission done once every two years. If you bought your car new, the first emission is due after five years, then every other year thereafter.
