Need a favor from 2009 owners with I-Drive
Hello all,
I have been going back and forth with my dealership in regards to the navigation function on my I-drive. Most of the time I am not able to enter a house number when entering an address. Thus making the navigation useless to me. This past weekend I brought the car in for an unrelated issue but I brought it up again and ask them to bring in another 328i to compare. Of course the other 328's navigation works and you are able to enter house numbers. They said it is probably because you car is 2009 model. I am not buying that excuse and want to them update my system. If anyone can spare the time I was hoping you guys can post a picture of your navigation system with the house number NOT grayed out like the picture below. The state is NY, the county is Woodbury and the street is Jericho Turnpike. There are other counties that does the same thing for me. I original was going to post this locally but decided to post it here just in case others are experiencing the same problem. Thanks everyone I am heading back to the dealership this weekend. |

The OP should be able to enter a house number but it is not clear from his post as to whether this is happening only on specific streets or for every street.

I have a 2009 and I know there are certain streets it will not let me select a number on. I am wondering if it is greyed out because it's a turnpike? There wouldn't really be any number addresses. Of course, it shouldn't always be like this.

tried the address on my 2009 and i'm not able to enter house number either.
as far as i know, grey means either you didn't enter the information in the boxes above or navigation database doesn't have house number data for that city/street you entered. so it doesn't allow you to enter further data. possibly 2010/2011 navigation have that info and you are able to enter the house number. |

I had that issue today on a street that goes through a lot of fairly good size towns (like Washington DC suburbs) and varies from 3 or 4 lanes in each direction to one lane in either direction. For much of the road in the DC area - from Arlington to Leesburg, the road is lined with houses and stores - all with numbers - yet the BMW nav ('09) won't let me select house numbers either on this road.

Strangely enough, on my recent ED trip in my 2011, I was able to click on the greyed out house number and enter a number. I had a full address in Prague that neither Google or Mapquest recognized, so when I saw that BMW had it greyed out, it didn't surprise me. I clicked on it anyway and entered the number, and the navigation took me straight there. I don't think it is supposed to work this way, though.

I have never had this issue on my 2009 that I can recall. Like others have suggested, it's possible that certain roads (Interstates, Turnpikes, etc) don't allow house numbers simply because there aren't any, but in this case I think it might be a database issue. I have a 2009 (01/09 build), but I have updated to the 2010 Navigation software (got the ISTA/P 2.37.1.0.1 during the update as well). I can't say for sure if this would have been the same with the 2009 database, but it appears fixed for 2010:
Picking the State, City & Street, house number is NOT greyed out: Notice it also shows "Nassau County" after the town name, whereas the OP's does not. I have a feeling that is a difference in the databases. Selecting house number shows a possible range from 7500-8699: I randomly chose 7745: Number shows as part of the address for the final destination: |

I, too, get the house number grayed out. I thought one possible reason was that streets like that have different names as they run through different towns. For example, I have RT. 27 near here, where it is also known as Lincoln Highway. If I remember correctly, I can put a house number only if I use Lincoln hwy as the address.
Also, I can't locate a Dunkin Donuts under "points of interest". |

Hey Thunder Dump (lol!) would you also be able to check another thing, please?
I used to have an '06. On the "current position" screen, it would always show the street I was on, and the town I was currently in. In my 2009, it won't show the town name if I am on a highway. I was wondering if that was changed/fixed for the 2010 nav. Thanks. |

Thanks everyone for posting your findings. It kinda sucks people are experiencing the same issues as I am. I am going to ask the dealership to upgrade with the 2010 maps if possible.
Thank you Thunder Dump for posting up the pics. |

They can upgrade you for about 220 bucks. I do it the easy way and just send addresses to the car via google maps. Much easier anyways.

Leesburg Pike. I was looking for the Sprint store (that used to be in Tysons) at 8311 Leesburg Pike (next to the Marshalls between Stohlman VW/Subaru and the Chevy place. Of course I only had the address and none of the other info, but the nav didn't allow me to pick a house number. It was the first time I ran into that issue and I know that NAVTEQ hasn't updated DC area maps in the last few years. OTOH, my wife's Honda Civic allowed me to put in the street number.

Yes, you need to have BMW Assist.
