Exhaust tips flaking !

The tailpipes on my 335d have what looks like a chrome plating on them and it is flaking. Does anyone know if these are covers of part of the actual exhaust ? as its a 2010 model I should be able to get it sorted under warranty

I thought they were made of stainless steel with no coating. If it is under warranty they should definitley cover that!

Do you have any pictures?

If it's stainless then it's possibly an area of pitting which is holding onto the carbon deposits making it very hard to clean and may give the appearance of flaking chrome in concentrated areas. This is mostly found on the lower curve of the pipe as that's where excess fuel/water makes the most contact. A good going over with some 000 wire wool and a mild metal polish followed up with high temp metal sealant would sort it out. This is basically what I had to do on the stock 335i pipes which weren't plated. But that was a '56' plate so might be totally different to D's and/or later models.

If it's chrome plated then I'm not sure if your warranty would cover it as depending on how it's been worded it will most likely only cover the mechanical integrity of the exhaust system and not the cosmetics unless of course they are removable tips, in which case there's a good chance you can get them replaced.

In any case it's worth chasing. Don't ask, don't get.

I will pop into the stealers today for them to take a llok. I did the wire wool thing a couple of days back and it lookes much better but it is definately flacking as bits came off and there is still a line that feels sharp where it peeled back to

Booked it for a day in a couple of weeks time to get them sorted under warranty....needed a loan car or it would have been done sooner. They say they are covers and will replace them both.

Took it in and picked it up again at the end of the day with nothing done. Apparently it will need the whole back box changed as they are not covers. So 2 back boxes are on order and the car is booked back in for about 10 days time.

Are the dealers for real?

The 335i/d tips are welded on - numpties!

At least you've got new back boxes out of them - a few hundred quids worth!
