Hi Paul,

All the 335d's I've been in as a passenger have been awesome! You will get a good mix of smooth driving, economy and performance. I test drove the 335i and it is obviously very quick, but not great economy. The engine note of the 335i however is fantastic!

I suppose you need to think about practicality too what with a second nipper on its way...

Not too bothered about these as I prefer aftermarket Nav and am not a fan of the second hump on the dashboard. Most Nav's have bluetooth inbuilt now anyway.

Awesome car/spec.

Glad you added, wasn't sure initially if E90 or E92.

Similar spec to mine except I didn't have the courage to go Terra but do like it.

I personally think it is a mistake not to get Nav as I think on a car of that high spec people will expect it and it may make it that little bit harder to sell. With bluetooth, you also get the voice control free I believe and all integrated into the car. It is more money but if that was an issue there's probably some spec you could lose unless it is all essential - I did that in the end.

I went for front PDC which combined with the Nav gives you the funky radar thing showing where people are walking/where you are about to hit.

You've gone for some 'unusual' options in terms of storage etc. - do you need all that?

Like the comfort access, was tempted but I'd already spent too much!

I liked the idea of the lights package as I believe that means the door handles light up when you unlock the car also, mind you with comfort access might not be worth it!

I went for the electric seats, perhaps because I'm used to a 2 door where they are essential but also because my wife drives it and I hate trying to get in and manually move the seats after she's been in it - like the idea of them doing so automatically off the keyfob (which I believe/hope they will).

Looks like you've taken the decision, as I did when faced with stripping back some spec, to drop/not have a CD changer because you have the Ipod interface.

Just make sure your car actually comes with the cable as there have been lots of probs with that, which I'm sure will be worked out by the time you get the car.

It is reassuring that someone with E90 is getting another.

You swaying 335d or i or not sure?

Nav is expensive, but I like they way it brings all radio, parking sensor, nav, options etc.. all together. it's also one of the most cost effective options in terms of return at the end & will make your car a lot easier to sell on.

I'm still speccing my e92, originally i wasn't going to get nav but after seeing it in action I think I might have to get it

I'm also in the throws of a 335i vs 335d dilema! I've had an all-day test drive in the d, the dealer is supposed to be ringing me back today about the i. I've had a quick go in the i, but 10 mins round the dealership with the chap in the car from another dealer is not a good indicator.

I'm currently leaning towards the i, I dont do many miles so the 8mpg reduction in economy is not a bit issue. It's also a going to be a company car to i'm not fussed about the increased depreciation on the i. (It's also cheaper so I can get a couple more toys on it & stay in budget)

The Terra may change as may the paint.
The storage I hope will come in useful as the kids (soon!) grow up.
Comfort access should be a boon when leaving Tesco's with 2 kids and shopping bags hanging off me
As for the door handle lights - I'm a bit confused - mine do that already - no extras - I thought that was standard?
I'll try not to let the missus drive it
USB - no need for cd's -

Now the big question - D or i - about £1700 difference in price but new road tax and fuel costs to work through. I do around 13000miles a year so need to work out the costs. The biggest thing for me though is Automatic (D) or Manual (i)

I've never owned an automatic.

I've never owned an auto either but the new step is impressive.

Very handy for pottering about town & when in traffic, but you can always use the paddles (although DS is good) when you want to give it some welly.

Bit of a best of both worlds, if slightly less involving.

I'm liking it if the door handle lights do that as standard then!

I don't think with discounts the price difference is as much as that, particularly if you want Auto anyway....the difference becomes less. The tax is less.

I'd never owned an automatic but I've gotten fed-up with gear changing and like the idea of the paddles also, test drove one and it was great and the paddles are really intuitive.

I think we are in similar situation in that my wife and I are about to start a family, and I'm also more ferrying the in-laws around in the back and I wanted something practical, with 'poke', comfortable etc.

To be honest, I probably would have gone auto 335i were it not for the delays on the engine - waiting til June/July/August (then possible further) wasnt' something I wanted to do, and May seems much sooner!

I also think resale on 335d will be higher to compensate.

I'd heard there were delays, didn't know they were that long though. Is that info definate? A month or two does seem a long extra wait but i'll probably own my car for 3-4 years so it's not too long in the grand scheme of things

The door handle lights definately light up on unlocking.

The price difference is £1642 according to my quotes so far - don't forget that's a manual i vs an auto D (same spec otherwise)

Auto for 335i is £1490

Manual i vs auto D isn't a fair comparison!

So really there's about 200 quid difference after you factor the auto in!

Just priced up Nav and Bluetooth £2500 - I personally don't think its worth it and I don't think you'd get that back on resale either.

True - I'm going to try and get a days test drive in a 335d M Sport. If I can stick the auto - I think thats what I'll go with. I think my 320D is fast so bring on the 335D

Anyone priced up BMW individual stuff at all?

Very expensive, I think the standard choice of colours and interiors are nice enough unless you have money to burn!

You wouldn't get £2500 (presumably that is undiscounted) back on resale but you have to factor in buying a portable nav, not getting the use of it all integrated and what you would get on resale.

IMHO that is too high a spec 3 series not to have it and most people paying for a 335d (top of range effectively) will expect it.

Maybe not, and maybe too early to say but when I was looking for an X5 the ones without sat nav sat around at dealerships for a mightly long time and got offered less money for them... perhaps X5 is much more spec-sensitive.

29k doesn't seem that bad considering you could've bought it for 35-36 with a discount (depending on spec). 6k loss in first year of a car sounds a lot maybe but is someone going to pay say 34 when they can get a new one for 35-36.
