Didn't C&D get 5.9 out of stock 328i?

Sweet!

Did you use DS or M mode? Looked to me the car was shifting at redline.

Do you have light weight wheels and tires on? If not they might help a little more.

I just noticed you have an ix, that says a lot about what you have gained. Did you change gears at redline or around 5500 to 6000?

Have you ever tried to use M mode and let the car shift for you and see what time can you get? In M mode the car shifts at redline instead of 6000. In DS mode the car actually shifts at between 5500 to 6500 I think.

You are not the only one saying this. Based on some empirical 335i analysis, the optimum shifting points are very close to 7000 redline from 1st to 3rd gear. I begin to think the difference has to do with the fact the 328i has higher gear ratios than 335i.

The only reason 335i's shouldn't be shifting at redline is because of torque curve. The NA 328i N52 is what people would consider conventional "peaky." Let it wring out all the revs for best results.

No, it more to do with the different torque curves and the fact one is F/I and falls flat on its face when its within 1000 to 1500rpm or so of redline.

Redline the crap out of an N52 for best results.

The 335i is certainly faster, but the 328i can get out of it's own way.

I was refering to the empirical optimum shift analysis for the 335i, which called for best shifting points near redline, which if correct should make the 328i even closer to redline, like you said.

But in the real world practice, we hear that people get better time in 328i's by shifting BEFORE redline. Maybe that 335i analysis was wrong. If not, the only possible reason I can think of is the 328i has higher gear ratios.

I know the 335i owners don't like to hear it, driving a BMW NA I6 car, especially for the fact you can WOT it all the time, is pure pleasure Unfortunately they likely will disappear soon.

I've not heard of 335i accelerating faster by shifting at red line. HP fall off is pretty sharp past ~5500rpm on 335i unlike 328i, so I'd surprised people pull off better time by getting into lower HP range.

328i certainly has different gear ratio and final drive ratios, much higher than 335i. However, different optimal shifting point is all due to the difference in HP vs RPM in two engines.

Where is this empirical data you saw?
