Review of 2014 Chevy Cruze Diesel

I have to admit I had a bit of trepidation but it turns out that GM has done a good job of making the Chevy Cruze Diesel a much better car than the Chevy Cruze.

I guess starting with a German engine didn't hurt.

Having the best highway fuel economy of any diesel sold in the U.S. - as well as any non-hybrid sold in the U.S. - isn't bad either.

It's a competent choice when shopping a Jetta TDI although VW and TDI fans will of course go for Wolfsburg.

2014 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel – First Look and Review
Quote:
The diesel market in the United States has been controlled by German automakers, DSC_4183namely Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Volkswagen, for the past decade or so. Although the Chevrolet Cruze Diesel is the first diesel auto to appear in the U.S. from one of the Big Three automakers, it has a much stronger German heritage than one would imagine. First, it’s a globally developed and designed four-door sedan and General Motor’s Opel unit in Germany played a leading role in its development. Second, its engine is built at GM’s Opel components factory in Kaiserslautern (Opel Motoren Kaiserslautern GmbH)....

This is good news. We need more diesel vehicles in the US (particularly trucks and SUVs). The cruze is a good looking vehicle in its price range. I hope they find success in this option.

I've always liked the look of the Cruze. I wouldn't buy one but I am happy to see more diesel options on this side of the pond.

I had a gas powered Cruze as a rental car last Fall, and I was quite pleasantly surprised by it. It drove real nice and was nicely equipped for an econo box. It got great mpg as well. Happy to see diesels coming over here.

Mazda has a diesel version that should be available by end of the year..... Looking forward to seeing that in person.

Currently they are doing endurance road race testing on it.
