DIY air conditioner foul smell removal.
DIY air conditioner foul smell removal.
I wanted to write a DIY that would help the community get rid of that stinky foul smell that comes from the air conditioner. I figured I would do it before the winter fully sets in. Ozone is a way to remove mold/mildew which is what is causing the odor. This happens when you have recirculated cabin air selected and 60 degree set, and turn the A/C off . This scenario allows extra condensation to build up and mildew to grow. It has been recommended to set your knob to 72degrees before turning the A/C off to not allow that scenario to happen. I bought an air zone XT-6000 for my house to get rid of the smoke smell from the previous owners smoking indoors. It worked great so I decided to use it for this. A little background on the product from the web. " XT-2000/4000/6000 Series The Air-Zone XT High Powered Ozone Generators are advanced professional models designed for high ozone shock treatments in unoccupied areas. That means no people, plants, or pets in the same space when the generator is running. They are used to give shock treatments in specific areas to combat strong odors, and kill mold spores and bacteria. They work great for car dealerships, hotel rooms, crime scene clean-up, sports equipment, basements and smoke smell removal. The XT-2000 can shock treat up to ~400 sq. ft. The XT-4000 can shock treat up to ~900 sq. ft. The XT-6000 can shock treat up to ~1600 sq. ft. Remember these units can only be used in unoccupied spaces! A high concentration of ozone is a MUST to kill bacteria and Mold Spores! Rated Ozone Output Per Hour: Fully variable from 1000 mg/hr to 6000 mg/hr. (Price: $799.99) " Alright now for the DIY portion. 1) open the hood 2) remove the 4 screws for your cabin air filter 3) use tape to line the vent inlet. I did this by folding the tape back Ono itself so its sticky on booth sides . 4) use a cardboard adapter 5) purchased a drainage flex adapter from Home Depot 6) connected the ozone machine 7) turned the car on to accessories 8) turned the blower on low ( two bars) with outside air selected . No faster than two bars or the unit will shut down due to the air being sucked out of the unit causes the fan over speed malfunction . Keep the A/C button off. Cold air can reduce the ozone effectiveness . 9) turned the ozone machine on for ten minutes while all doors closed 10) Let the ozone stay inside the car for 30 min and then air it out. Try not to breathe it in. 11) run your blower for a bit to let it circulate out. 12) smell is gone.

Im sure that ozone generator is super powerful but I bought a ozone generator off Amazon for $60 for the same job, worked great. Might take longer or require more treatments but it completely took the smell away.
