Question Check engine and shake

Driving today on the highway with cruise control and the check engine light pops up. I continued to drive and turn off cruise control because i had to slow down. However when i tried to accelerate again the car started to shake as if i was driving over rumble strips on the road. Tried again and it shook again quite violently.

Immediatelly i get into thh right lane to pull over and see what happening and then the check engine light goes away and no issues accelerating.

Now everything is fine.

Anyone with similar experience?

fuel pump, vanos solenoids, coil ... there's lots of stuff that could do this. have the codes read if your CEL came on.

Yup, 99% sure its a misfire, could be caused by a number of things. coils/injectors/fuel pump, etc. best bet is to the read the codes and go from there.

OMG I JUST WANTED TO POST THAT. I had similar issues starting last week and I feel like it's coming up more often. I am on COBB Aggressive and thought it might have something to do with Misfiring or that I lost a Turbo or something. But as stated here, after driving with the vibration and engine light on for a few minutes, the light turns off and the shaking stops and I regain full power.

I brought the car to my independent shop today, and he said he can't find anything. No codes, nothing that leaks or looks wrong and also on the test drive he couldn't get to that problem (maybe cause I de-installed the COBB).

Any ideas?

Look for the DYI to check if you have a bad coil. It's very easy to do. That's what I did and sure enough, I had one that was bad so I replaced it. 30 min job.

UPDATE:

Took the car to the dealer for diagnostics. Turns out it was a misfire in cylinder 1 due to bad ignition coil. The tech interchanged the coils between cylinder 1 and 3 sure enough the misfire followed the faulty coil.

They replaced the ingnition coil along with the spark plug under warranty.

A day after, im letting her hang in DS and sure enough check engine light pops up again car starts to shake like a virgin on prom night. After 30 sec check engine light clears itself and everything is back to normal. I guess ill be going back to the dealer.

Keep you all posted.

I bet its injectors. I've had same problem twice. They clear themselves but will act up again.

i'm having the same issue...

my car just hit 54k and on monday, i am driving to my barber shop and out of nowhere my CEL comes on and the car is stuttering under 2k rpm above that it's pretty smooth but i really don't want to push it.

I'm not sure if it's me HPFP & Injectors because i already had them replaced last year, i have a 2008 338xi what do you think it could be?

I did not see any oil leaks, no funny smells, i'm not sure if it's a bad coil or spark plugs/wires

This is for BIGJOE...

Go to autozone or the equivalent. Get them to read the code. You will know then and there if it is a coil.

It definitely sounds like a misfire and a bad coil is a possible culprit. I would get the code read for free and then go from there. If it is the coil then yea the car will run fine after. You could also do a self diagnose by removing all the plastic shit on top of the engine. Disconnect one coil at a time and see if the way that the car idles changes, does it run rougher or the same.... If you unplug a coil and the idle gets worse, then you have unplugged a good coil, so plug it back in. If the idle does not change at all, then the coil you unplugged was already dead and needs to be replaced.

Sorry i forgot to post a SECOND UPDATE to my problem.

After replacing one ignition coil and a spark plug the problem returned the very next day. This time they replaced 3 injectors and 3 spark plugs (bank 1) and pre cat O2 sensor. Been riding good since.

Of course they juiced me for $50 deductible each time. Damn crooks, and it was even treated as a "come back" to the same issue. BMW dealers i hope you die choking on that $50
