Rattle From Exhaust?
I've had an annoying problem for a while which I've decided I now need to do something about. Whenever I pull away I get a slight zinging rattle from what sounds like the Exhaust.
This only seems to happen at between 1000-2000rpm and then goes away as the revs rise. The fact that it only happens at those revs makes me think it's either the exhaust valve flaps or the exhaust resonating against something at a certain frequency. There doesn't seem to be any excess movement from the exhaust though so any ideas what this might be? |

This sounds like the dreaded wastegate rattle. There is lots of info on this if you do a quick search.
On the other hand it might just be a loose heat shield. |

I had a very similar problem, turned out it was grit and small stones stuck in the chrome exhaust trim - depending on the type it either pulls off or has a grub screw underneath.

You can check whether its your exhaust flap by doing the golf tee mod:

I did the golf tee mod and it made little difference. Only the pitch of the rattle changed.

Don't think it's a wastegate rattle as it's not coming from the engine bay, it's coming from the rear of the car and definitely sounds like something to do with the exhaust. Either the flap inside or the exhaust vibrating against something. It's quite faint and only audible for a second or two as you pull away from a standstill but it does it every time I pull away so I've finally decided to try to solve the mystery.
I'll try the Golf tee mod to see if this changes anything, failing that I'll get the car up on a ramp to see if anything is moving. The car is under warranty but I find dealers are pretty useless at finding\dealing with rattles and creaks. |
