SCR Metering valve replacement after SES and P2063 code

Hey everyone,

Just picked up my car after getting an SCR metering valve replaced after my SES light came on. I paid $503 for the parts/labor...only to come home to learn there was a "service action" on this exact part back in April of 2012, when my car was under warranty. Based on the document, there should be a sticker in the B pillar indicating it was done...which it hasn't been.

Has anyone else had this valve replaced, and if so, was it proactive by your dealer? I attached the bulletin to this....and needless to say, I'm a bit POed that I'm paying for this replacement now when it should have been done while the car was under warranty in 2012.

Cheers,
Paul

My car was an Oct. 2009 delivery. They never did the replacement on my car...I looked at the service history and don't see any mention of it.

Actually, it looks like I'm wrong. It was in fact replaced in June of 2012. Just saw the summary page. I guess that means the new part suffered the same problem with DEF crystallization. I assume that means I'm out $503...and may be again in 2 years, since this new valve suffered the same issue, according to the service sheet.

Usually BMW parts and labour are warranted for 2 yrs. You may have just missed it by a tad over a month.

Actually read the service bulletin you posted carefully; it says covered regardless of time or mileage

In any case - are you sure they replaced THIS part as opposed to SCR mixer or EGR valve?

It seems with many cars even though this bulletin was out, when the warranty recall came out later, this campaign got more or less 'over-written' and/or forgotten about.

How many miles on your car? The metering valve is an emissions part and is covered in California emissions states until 7/70.

Floyd (had mine replaced at 60K under CA emissions warranty here in WA state)

I've had this done under emissions warranty. Didn't even have to pay the $50 copay for the visit.

I'm going to call BMWNA and see if there is any sort of coverage for this, espeically since its a second failure. Being a service bulletin related part and being in CA, I'm amazed that an emissions related part isn't covered by then7 yr emissions warranty. I didn't have to pay for the fuel pumps in my ex 335i...this just seems odd.

I think I saw the error code for urea fluid metering flash on to Carly before accidentally deleting it, i.e., I didn't have a chance to write it down.

Is this DEF tank failure or just the valve into the exhaust system getting caked up?

Metering Valve Replacement

Realize this is years late. Engine light came on and the shop said it was the metering valve. After seeing this post, I called the dealer and they said they don't have record of this recall and would have to diagnose on their own ($169). 2011 335d

Any suggestions on steps to take?

This was the SIB: SIB TIS SCR Metering Valve.pdf It's from April 2012
If your car didn't have the recall done (note the production dates covered) you could argue that replacement is free.

But metering valves fail all the time, so it's likely the dealership is correct.

If the dealer won't work with you, just remove it and soak it in distilled water for a few minutes to remove the crystalized DEF crud. That's what I did and it's been fine for probably 20k miles.
