Do i need to remove other parts first? Like, can I go out to the car and easily take it off now>? I am quite the noob when it comes to DIY stuff and am hesitant to mess around in the engine bay. Some pics of what it looks like now would be great too! the RealOEM diagram is a bit confusing.

So its just the pod intake with the top part of the airbox attached.

Sounds awesome, grunty and snorty, exactly what i was after, dont know if this would affect the cars running in the long term, but sounds awesome.

Going to now change the pod to an aftermarket!
I'm not sure how safe it is to leave the stock paper filter sitting outside exposed to the elements and engine bay heat. It is designed to sit inside a sealed airbox.

You should definitely find an aftermarket one ASAP. If you compare an aftermarket pod with an OEM one, they are completely different materials.

Yep, The OEM filter is the paper pod with that cotton/wool like sleeve around it.

Already got something sorted mate.. didnt feel 100% confident with it exposed in the engine bay.

Having a tough time finding a pod filter with a 3.25" opening and 5" base diameter..
K&N only make one but its hard to get a hold of one in Perth.

I'll post some up on the weekend, havent had time to take apart the whole intake and take photos.

Sorry about the incomplete posts, i was using the iphone app.

Its a K&N filter, 3.25" inlet diameter x 7" length and 4.75" bas diameter.
The filter has reduced all the hesitation it use to have at about 1,600-1,700rpm, revs smoooth and you can hear the change in engine sound at about 4,500rpm.

Not as snorty but feels like its breathing freely

I have a K&N installed. Will show pics when I get my car back.

At 0-3,500 its an improvement definately. But at the higher ranges 4-5000rpm, it feels like its worst than the stock one for some reason, tha car picks up speed slower, much slower

Your car is a 320i? The car is slow enough as it is at high range. Not sure whether I want to be making that even worse... Is your K&N still in the stock airbox and fully enclosed?

Post whenever you get time. But you say the car does feel better than stock? Maybe the open airbox + K&N allows greater airflow at higher revs, whereas the K&N in stock closed airbox might be choking a bit for air. ???

If you've installed the replacement k&n for enclosed use, as you've mentioned it seems there wasnt much difference.

Other setups worth trying is an open setup which retains the top piece of the air box.
The car seems to rev freely and has no hesitation in the rev range at all.

With the filter enclosed in the box, the actual air being fed to it is minimal, our "snorkel" on our intake is only half open compared to the 6 cyls which have both open. (I'll take a picture to illustrate this)

For $80 i cant really complain, its not going to add 10hp but it changes the way the engine runs and sounds. Also alot cheaper than having the dealers change ure filter for $150.

Looks like a great setup there tj, looks exactly stock from the top. The filter seems to stick out a bit though, so it looks like you can't actually have the whole airbox on? Maybe go for one that is slightly shorter.

Suj, you should do this. I'll help you do the install

Went for a larger pod as i didnt want the base of the box (hopefully doesnt effect the car hahah) to get a bit more noise out of the old 4 pot Intake silencer made the engine note too discreet.

Do you have a product number? I'm searching through the K&N listings to try and find one with these dimensions. I know the direct replacement filter for the 320i is E-2021, but the one you have is different isn't it? Also, where did you get it from? With Jeef Beefs help im gonna give this set up a try!

My mistake mate its a 3.5" inlet diameter, i used this size as K&N have the largest range of filters with this diameter.

You will however have to purchase a spacer to get the 3.5" diameter to fit on the roughly 3.18" opening on the car.

Once you locate this spacer, (i picked one up at the local super cheap auto, shouldnt be more than $20.) find a filter that has a base diameter not greater than 5" and the length is at your own discretion.

From what i found, the shorter filters in length do provide a snortier intake noise, as for a longer filter like mine, it provides a smoother engine note.

Let me know how you go mate

I might just try the direct replacement one and see how it goes. It seems to be a lot shorter than your one though.
