Almost left me Stranded...
Driving home today, crusie control on @ 65MPH... i see a triagle with a ! pop up on my cluster... the car starts shaking slightly as if its misfiring when i apply gas...
Get off my exit, Turn my car car off, as soon as i did that the Oil canister shows up on the cluster, i check oil level and its says it LOW and i need to add 1QT. i start the car up and the Service engine light is on ... I just hit 4800 miles on my car !! this is ridiculous.. what could it be ? ill add a quart of mobil 1 in the morning ... ahhh Last edited by Qmax03; 03-16-2010 at 09:20 PM.. |

Maybe someone stole some motor oil from you. You've seen those guys who siphon gas right? Maybe the price of oil has gotten that high. |

If your car is shaking from a low oil level, you will have some serious problems my friend.
Probably (hopefully) not related to the oil level IMO. These cars drink oil for dinner though, especially in the first 10,000 mi.

The car should not start shaking or the like if oil is a bit low.
When the yellow oil light is on after ignition is turned of, you should add some oil but you're still fine to drive the car for a bit. If the red oil light goes on you're in trouble... especially if it's the wife's car and she tells you that there's some annoying little light on the dashboard which won't go away, for a few days already

Oil light will come on after ignition is turned off. Is your car tuned?

Probably a code that was triggered by the engine when your oil was low. The dealer will have to reset if you don't have a BT Tool to test it.

High pressure fuel pump whaaaaaat?
Be sure to check the shadow codes too. I had a misfire code with almost the exact same scenario (shaking on highway) and it was a bad fuel pump.

if your car is in warrantee....
..... then the BMW dealership should not be charging you for that quart, unless it's something you wanted to take home with you or keep as a spare, etc.
If you brought the car in, and drive up to the service bay, and say: "it's telling me I need oil" and it's in warrantee, they should pick up the tab. |

I vote HPFP, I've had the shaking before when applying throttle after Limp mode. Turned out to be fuel pump. I'm thinking you just happened to be low on oil as well...
