I had my rear pads changed at 55k didn't do rotors will do them next time tho.. I am at 75k now and my idrive says I have 10k left on the front however, it sounds as the left front pad is squeaking.. I hear there is a brake light that comes on that is more accurate than the idrive mileage left. Should I just wait till that kicks on?

You could wait until the brake light comes on but at that point you have to replace the sensor as well(only like 20 bucks. I would just look at it by eye and see if you need replacing.

How do you eye the pad without pulling the tire?

Prob do need new pads 75k is about the max for them.. Especially the way I drive >.>

You can just go to any brake place and they tell you the life of them for free or even bmw when you get an oil change.

3k away from oil change... lol I am starting to feel bad. i get all of these places to tell me what is wrong then just do it myself.

get a flashlight cause it's hard to see in there. But you can look where the brake pad meets the rotor and see how much life you have left. rears are easier to see than the fronts

When the light turns red, you still have about 2mm of pad left.

nothing is more accurate then looking at it.



the silver part is the pad life, the black part is the backing. the wire is the sensor.

I zip tied my sensors to the brake lines and will check the pads manually...

I usually wait until the CBS tells me I am within 150 miles of new brakes.

A lot of people do that when they DIY brakes and want to save money by not replacing sensors, it gets rid of the warning.

Yeah I suppose the sensors are somewhat pointless.. You have the metal strip or whatever they put in there that squeaks bad when they get low anyway... My pads started squeaking about 800 miles before the sensor was going to come on anyway.

I occasionally have the tires off so I check the pads at that time. I got annoyed last time when my sensors tripped before the pads really needed changed. I don't want to see that message on my I-Drive for several thousand miles unnecessarily.
