Arrow E90 330d Weird "Duck" type noise from engine on tickover

I've got this weird annoying noise coming from the nearside of the engine on my 330d - anyone shed any light on it?

It is intermittent.

It isn't related to engine speed.

Answers on a postcard please! The winner will receive a reach-around from Will

I think it is the EGR valve pressure convertor........

I had the same with mine, but it made the noise briefly at the end of engine overrun. I had leaking secondary seals on the manifold so i renewed the EGR solenoid valve whilst i had it off and the noise went away.

Nope, no performance drop-off whatsoever. I'm certain it is the EGR pressure converter at fault as if I crimp the EGR pipe shut the noise stops.

I have a second hand one (fully functional) you can have if you want to spend a bit of time on the fault finding before you cough up £££ for a new one. From a 35d. Drop me a pm if you're interested

Thanks for the offers; in the end I bought a new one (needed some wiper blades at the same time) so got a genuine one, £86+VAT

Now just got to fit the damned thing!

Dave,if you havent done so already, then i would suggest you buy some vacuum hose and renew them whilst you have the manifold off.

I have exactly the same noise from the same location. I pulled the pipe from the EGR valve and the noise ceased. I can't say I have noticed any change in performance and the Pierburg PDF article does appear to indicate that the noise is not indicative of a faulty pressure converter. They would say that though!

I assume that the inlet manifold definitely needs to be removed? I guess I'll have to face up to removing the inlet manifold again after replacing a glow plug and resealing the swirl flap cartridges last summer.

Dave - is there any chance you can repost the picture showing the location of the pressure converter?

Fixed it today by fitting a second hand pressure converter which cost me £25. An awkward fiddly job as the inlet manifold needs to come off.

The pressure converter is screwed to the side of the cylinder head/engine block next to the glow plug controller and above the starter motor.

I replaced most of the vacuum hoses at the same time with 4mm internal diameter silicone hose.

The symptoms were originally a rhythmic, twice per second, bass beat noise coming from the nearside of the engine for the past 12 months or so. Recently this turned into the loud "duck" noise.

Now all is quiet.

.
I question the use of silicone hose. Once exposed to heat they become soft like chewing gum, collapse under vacuum and silicone hose aint even oil proof. At your own interest please only use BMW stuff here. And yes, the hose is expensive. I bought 9 meters that have cost me ~150$ US. Crazy!!!

Maybe some duck tape is cheaper

Thanks for the reply, will keep it in mind when I get it fixed.

As a general question, if I don't get it fixed immediately would it cause other issues or just continue to sound like a duck?

Thanks

I got my car a few months back, had the exact same noise, garage replaces the pressure regulator and it's been fine.
It drove ok, in fact, could only hear it stood outside the car.
But the guy who had it before me was doing about 600 miles a week in it, so I can't imagine it's something that can't wait.
Good luck with it
