OT But need to Get it Off My Chest

Well it happened again.

Dual carriageway, dry evening, accelerated up to c90 overtook a black skoda octavia, nice and decent, indicated early, cut back in well in front, sorted.

Notice the skoda is not dropping back, hmmm, interesting, plan my re-entry back into the inside lane, nice opportunity arises and ease back in no need to brake. Skoda pulls in behind at a respectable distance. Guessed it yet?

Glance in rear view - blue lights emerging from it's grill, oh dear - alistair stewart police camera action - without the chase.

Panic, where to pull over, keep composed continue to the roundabout, and then onto supermarket petrol station. Please could you join me in my car etc etc.

Bottom line 3 points 60 quid massive insurance. Final straw in Porsche ownership - going to buy sensible 335 se if bonus allows.

feel a bit sick really - no-one to blame etc...

Sorry to hear that mate. I would be gutted too. Its not so much the fine, but the points that hurt... Did they offer you the points or one of those courses to avoid the points?

You won't be disappointed if you get a 335

oops i did it again

no offer of a course and to be frank 3 points seems to be generous so i didn't push - anyways don't think i was really thinking straight enough to ask.

think i need a car with a bit more q factor to avoid the endless road challenge which leads to over zealous driving - think a 335 se may be spot on

cheers

Good rule of thumb, do not allow anyone to match your speed or follow you unless you can postively identify them. If someone decides to match your speed slow down and check them out. We have cops in Ford Mustangs that do similiar things over here.

Tough one. It's allways the unmarked cars you can't do much about. The police have unmarked Subarus in Surrey, dark colours, patrol A3 and M25.

If its any consilation, I think i have a ban on the way... Im 90% certain i got caught by a mobile camera van hidden on a bridge over looking a long straight dual carriageway... 80 - 90 in a 50 limit!!

van was unable to be seen.... from oncoming direction.

so im making the most of my licence at the moment!

Wasn't the A229 down to Maidstone was it. I used to work at Sandling and they were allways out on that stretch with the camera vans.

Funnily enough had exactly the same thing to me, in Hampshire, in a Porsche, by an unmarked Skoda.

This was when I had a 996 C4S,on the M3 near Fleet Services, on my way back from a trackday at Thruxton. really having trouble keeping below a hundred. Went past the Skoda doing a fair bit, then got stuck behind slower traffic when the Skoda came up behind, soon after the blues started flashing. Recorded me at 96, 3 points and a fine, luckily it's not affected my insurance.

Have since moved to a 335i and not really missing the Porsche all that much.

Guys

Thanks for the messages - helps knowing that there's folk about with similar experiences.

Rochester BMW - shouldn't admit this but I have been banned for 56 days, last year doing 117 mph on the A422 Tingewick By-Pass in a 645 ci. I ended up getting a £650 fine and 56 days - I thought this was good considering I was over 30 mph over the limit.

If you're interested I can pass on the name of the solicitor I used - excellent chap with a passion for all things automotive and a very good track record.

I handed over by licence today at the local nick, in my B&Q jacket (I work there!) and got nothing but piss take about B&Q clearly paying too much given what I'm driving. Kind of helped make me feel human again!

Thanks again for the messages

Im not sure if i have actually been flashed... although i went under the roundabout junction of the M20 (i was heading north bound on the A229) when i looked into my rear view mirror and noticed a scammera van sitting on the bridge that i just came out from underneith.....

I cant recall my exact speed but it was definatly over 80 (in a 50 limit). I dont have anyone to blame apart from myself so i will have to except the concequences that come my way.

I am expecting a ban of some sort however.

Having spoke to people who know the location ive been told that the van targets people coming down blue bell hill.... and that the laser guns work in such a way that they are unable to catch a car that suddenly appears from coming under them (as they were on the bridge)

Its been nearly a week since i noticed the van in my mirror, I am hoping that I wasn't caught.... baby on the way and im the only driver in the house it would be impossible if i lost my licence.... should of thought about that first though really..... the scare has most definatly slowed me down however....

As far as i know they have 14 days (from the date of incident) to issue a NIP.... im wishing the next week away..... fingers crossed.

Hi Rochester

You have been informed correctly, the cameras are set up to catch speeders coming down Blue Bell Hill into Maidstone, so let's hope you got away with it.

They also sit at the top of the hill as well by the A2 junction and also on the M20 at the bottom of Wrotham Hill. When I worked at Sandling I would normally see one camera per day if the weather was good.

Regards

Chris

Thanks chris, Hearing more and more that the camera van targets people coming down blue bell hill, does put my mind at rest, although i have heard of one company owner in maidstone having his company cars flashed going UP the hill.....

One thing is definate, its not an obvious 'ive been caught' scenario, so ill just have to keep my fingers crossed and see what happens.

oh and SLOW DOWN!

thanks

Arrow

fingers crossed for you matey

i'm currently waiting to see if i got had by a forward facing truvelo that flashed : - the camera was definately a truvelo as it was a) forward facing b) had that distinctive blue arm c) had the 3 truvelo lines on the road infront of the scamera & 4) SAID "truvelo" on the side of the pillar... - now if i'd have seen nothing i'd be worried since they take their piccies with infra-red, but since i saw a blinding white flash it's got me proppa confused

I picked up two lots of 3 points very quickly about a year or so ago - both from mobile traps in towns I wasnt familiar with.

I bought a Talex on the recomendation of some mates in the Police and it is superb. Easy to keep up to date and has probably saved me another set of points already.

I now have it hardwired on the right hand side of the dash. - worth every penny!

Cheers

Doesn't a Talex do the same job as POI on Nav or a PDA though?

Much better than NAV POI - actually tells you the speed in the area where the warning is and if you are going faster tells you to slow down until safe speed then shuts up.

Also it is dead accurate and picks up the sites in just the right amount of time dependent on the speed you are traveling and is directional

The database is updated daily also which is a good thing.

I have had a Tom Tom with Speed Camera POI and a Road Angel 2 in the past and none have been as reliable or as easy to use - just the right kind of warnings without too much intrusion.

It just works simply but perfectly.

Oh and its £70 from Tescos!!

Cheers
