I recently bought a new-to-me 2011 335i XDrive. Whenever I shut the car down, I hear a strange electric motor sound coming from the front end. The car has adaptive headlamps....was maybe thinking it was these straightening out after I turn into my side load garage? Just curious....

Dunno, mine also seems to be alive when I don't lock the car. It'll make that servo noise and buzz for minutes afterwards.

Curious to find out as well.

The sound on shutdown is the electric water pump. It flows coolant for a few minutes after you shut down to cool the turbos.

The sound lasts not more than 10 seconds. I've done some google searching....seems like it might be the hvac system shuttering the ducts closed????

Any other ideas? Sounds like the the 5 series also has a similar deal.

I have heard all kinds of shit. Some of it is the AC vent going from open to recirc. If you remove the microfilter you can see it close just like closing blinds at home.

My cd changer wont shut up sometimes.

I was thinking either the coolant or fuel system...

vents make a different noise...I hear those too.

fueling systems prime when the car is unlocked, and the water pump flows upon shutdown to cool things down. If you sit inside the car when it has been turned off, the CD player unit makes all sorts of noises. I have no idea what that’s all about. I've sat in N54 powered E9xs, E6Xs, and E8Xs, they all do it.

The water pump runs as someone said, but isn't there also some emissions stuff going on when the engine shuts off.. fuel vapors etc.?

Unlock is definitely the fuel pump gearing up for work.

My car makes all sorts of noises, and my E39 was no different (the CD player especially went crazy with all sorts of random sounds on shutdown).

On a few occasions I've stayed in my car for a few minutes after shutting it off to wait on someone and it goes through a little symphony of humming/clicking sounds from all parts of the car. I hear the water pump come on and shut off, then I hear a few noises from the back of the car. There's also a slight "whirring" sound coming through the HVAC, which I assume is the system shutting down.

And of course the CD player has to sing me the song of its people.

Yeah I have owned three BMWs and they all make weird shut down noises...my E90 and E92 make the same mechanical noises but the E90 had the DVD based idrive which would not shut up for up to 15 min after the car was turned off.
