Stock Air Box mod ?

Has anyone removed the second filter within the stock airbox that sits behind the removable air filter ?

Other than the need to replace the air filter more frequently, can anyone think of a negative to removing this added restriction to air flow ?

That filter is called the charcoal filter. To remove it, you have to cut it out, grind down the excess, and thuroughly clean your airbox from the dust from the grinding. There are no negative effects because the purpose of this filter is only for emissions purposes. It filters out fumes that go in your intake. The only downside to this is that it isn't reversible.

Aside from a possibly different sound, I doubt there would be any benefits. If you do it, however, make sure you post back about it.

Those who have done the mod say that throttle response increases and the lag in the low rpm's disappears.

My plan is to add a K&N filter and swoop scoops. Seems to be a logical step to remove this additional filter.

I done this mod 1 month after receiving my E90 and it made a
difference in the hesitation felt at low RPM!

I did mine a long time ago with no negative effects. I had better throttle response and a slight increase in gas milage.

best idea is the buy a 2nd one to modify and just swap with the one in your car... incase you ever need it for emissions testing or if you sell the car.

check out tischer... saw them on there for like $25 or something.

Do a quick search for the DIY its around here somewhere. I did mine quite a while ago. Slightly better throttle response. This paired with the intake silencer delete makes the car growl at idle. - Yeah, I know it's not an aftermarket system, but it still sounds good for 'stock'.

That is just the intake hose, the filter is part of the Air cleaner assy IE the air box and its $406.42.

Its removing the intake resonator I added a arrow to the picture below. It just cut down on the drone coming from the intake.

The filter is glued/bonded to the MAF sensor side of the air box I am sure because I cut mine out a while ago!

Right i understand that and I believe you of where its located... however I'm saying I don't think its labeled as the part/price that you think it is which is why I'm asking Evan. I'm pretty sure the filter is included with that tube, all boxed in as #10 on the diagram. We'll know by tomorrow.

ya that filter just cuts down on the engine noise. if you take the filter box out and put in an aftermarket intake you can here the difference obviously. think of thay extra filter being a second muffler inside the intake compartment to cut down the direct flow of air to the throtal body. removing it will just give you a more direct flow. that might give you 2HP at most i would think since a intake sytem will give you about 7hp. i dont know what that would do for you warrenty either. for cutting somthing off. buy yes when i took out my stock intake and put my AFE in i was that peice and was thinking about what a pointless part it was taking the sportyness away from a sporty car.

The filter is NOT included in the "#10". The filter we are referring to in this thread is the charcoal filter. It is just as big as your normal air filter, and is glued in right by the air filter on the side of the airbox with the MAF sensor on it.

You need to take out the airbox, unscrew the torx screws, remove the air filter and MAF sensor, and then cut out the black charcoal filter with a utility knife. I then took a sandblock and got every last bit off. Then shop-vac it to get all of the black powdery residue off and put it all back together.

thanks for clearing that up. I think they may have been referring to the intake silencer though. =)
