Tires at lease turn in

A new set of OEM tires from tirerack will cost about $1200 bucks...quite a hit if your trying to turn in a car without penalty.

I found out that The dealer requires atleast 1/8 inch tread depth and no major defects on all tires at lease turn in or they will ask you to replace them...I didnt even ask what the dealer price is on those tires but Im sure its about 50 bucks more a pop.

My question is...typicaly, how many miles can you drive before you hit 1/8" and what percentage of tread left is 1/8"?

Depends really on how you drive. I have just over 16K miles now and about 1/4" on the rears. My guess is 1/8" is about 33%.

1/8" tread left is 40% tread of the original tread depth. New tires have 10/32" tread depth. Not sure how many miles you can drive until you're at 1/8" tread. Might just have to check every 10K miles to see how much tread you have left. Use the penny method. Make sure Lincoln's hairline is a just at the tread height. Check a couple different places on the tread. If the tread depth is at the top of his hair, you're too low. The distance from the edge of the coin to the top of Lincoln's hair is 1/16".

Ain't it the craps to have to try and play it right? I had an M3 and had to replace at about 12k with very mildly spirited driving (i.e. NO wheel spinning and brake slamming). I turned car in with 22k on it (3 year lease) and the second set of tires had PLENTY. Good luck.
