iOS 8 broke compatibility with iDrive/Sound?
So I upgraded my iPhone 5S to iOS 8 this morning and it looks like it may have broken compatibility to my iDrive/Sound on my 335. It seems like a hit and miss problem but pretty much every time I connect my lightning cable through usb port in the center console after the car is already started I get a message on my iPhone saying "this accessory is not supported" or something like that.
And when I navigate through iDrive (CD button) to select my phone through USB everything is greyed out. WTF. I listen to my music and everything through USB (spotify, pandora, itunes, etc) and now it's broken (somewhat). The only way I got it work was turn off the car so the iDrive shuts down, leave the lightning cable plugged in and turn on the car again. This seems to be working for me and I'm able to use my iPhone the same way as before but it sucks if I have to do this everytime. Any chances BMW may release a fix or update to make it fully compatible? Anyone else having issues with their iDevice running iOS 8 and getting it work on their stereo? Sorry if this post is long and doesn't make sense. I just had starbucks and I'm jittery as hell haha.

after you updated did you do a hard reboot on your phone? Hold down the home and lock buttons for 10 seconds until it reboots.
I find that fixes 99% of issues with iOS devices, especially after an update. |

Are you using the OEM lightning cable?

I too am having issues with my Apple 4S now updated to iOS 8. I use USB to play music from my iphone and now a song plays for a few seconds and restarts over and over. I've performed a hard reboot on my phone but this hasn't resolved the issue.

I'm having issues with iDrive in my 335 and my iPhone 5 too after updating to iOS8. My issue seems to be a bit different than above though. My phone will connect via the USB and I can navigate through my playlists, songs, artists, etc but then I try to play a song it won't start (it just says 0:00 for the play time and never does anything). I've found that if I browse songs on the phone itself and click play on the phone then it works but it's annoying not being able to control everything via iDrive. I'll try the hard reboot and see if that fixes the problem.

I was thinking that depending on certain model numbers you had to use a Y looking cable and cant just use your regular white USB cable with the iphone. Pardon my ignorance. I am new to all of this and was told that I had to use the Y cable with my 4S and not just the charging cable.

Lots of complaints on the Net about iOS8 & car Bluetooth compatibility problems.
Just got a used iPhone5 w/iOS8 installed on it which I just updated to iOS 8.0.2 and am going to see if it will pair to my E90 or not. Always had problems pairing w/my iPhone 4 w/iOS6, so it would be noting new to me. As for the Y-cable, I'm old school and just use an iPod classic w/it in my car. No problems doing that because the BMW's electronics are definitely retro. Sometimes it just doesn't pay to be a 1st adopter of new software upgrades because older electronic hardware (such as exists in our cars) simply isn't designed to cope w/them. Update: Just paired my iPhone 5 w/iOS 8.0.2 to my E90 iDrive but the problem I had before w/my iPhone 4 w/iOS6 was that the car would pair on start up after being parked overnight but would not pair again if I stopped/started the car after driving somewhere. Can't check that now because the car is laid up w/a bad water pump but will check it after that's repaired in a few days.

iOS & BT issues
FWIW... iPhone 6 and 6 Plus experiance.
My '10 335 base-stereo has an odd BT issues for voice, but ONLY on the 6 with 8.0.2, it connects/drops after 60 seconds. I can manually reconnect but then drops again after 60 seconds, mid-call. Tune2Air still works OK with the OEM iPhone/pod 30-pin adapter. Just not phone calls. BUT... THE PLUS WORKS FINE. Plays through Tune2Air/OEM 30-pin interface, picks up calls through the BMW BT. However, my wife's '11 535GT cannot connect at all to either device. Tried all manner of resets, order of operations, repairing, renaming and haven't gotten back to what it was with the 5S. Very odd... |

Does BMW normally release some kind of software update to "fix" or add/enhance compatibility with updated iPhones(phones) to our cars? I mean it looks like everything was working with iOS 7 but there are some weird quirks with iOS 8.

I have no idea but I have apps crashing left and right (here's looking at you Bimmerpost - but honorable mention goes to safari), so I think BT bugs are well within the probability realm.

My 5s has been weirder than normal as well. I have the older CCC system, but it's always paired/connected without issue. After I loaded iOS 8, I've had it not recognize anything is there at all (connectors were tight) fixed with a reboot of the iDrive. Then one day it refused to play the selected track, just kinda picked whatever it felt like. That fixed itself after I shut the car down and started back up after going to the store. Today the iDrive would display the track/playlist info, but wouldn't play anything until after the third try, then it wouldn't advance...just repeat the track. But the bluetooth has been flawless. I rebooted the iDrive again, then wound up shutting the car down, rebooted the phone and now it works fine. Weird. Had next to zero problems with iOS 7.

Apple is the problem not the car. This is why I wait months before I upgrade! I still have a 4s and it works just fine. Will not update the software on it.

Correct. A week later, it dd the same thing with the added bonus of the bluetooth dropping and I was a little more systematic in the troubleshooting and it was the phone, sure enough. Supposed to be fixed in 8.1, but I'm not holding my breath.

Widespread issue, not just BMW. Hopefully 8.1 will fix.
