Please help. import tax on shipping?

Hi guys I need some advice.

I wanting to buy something from the USA but I'm not sure how much it would cost with import tax or whatever it's called?

Anyone bought anything and how do they charge?

Roughly take what it costs in $ and just change that to £ for roughly final cost including shipping/import duty etc.

It's $449 and I've Googled it to pounds which is the equivalent £277

I got charged £20 import duty, VAT and handling charge by UPS .... for a £19 computer mouse !!! So just be aware ... I had no idea that a handling charge of £10 would be imposed !
