I own a 2006 e90 330xi 6speed MT. 148,000 Kilometers.
In the video I start accelerating around 16s, and then at 24s I push the clutch in to coast to a stop. There is a metallic clanging that decreases as I come to a halt. At 32s I put it in reverse and start backing up, and then let off to slow to a halt in reverse. The recording was taken place at the shifter with the boot removed, so directly above the transmission. I can hear the noise outside, but it is not as loud.

Anyone know what the clanging could be? Transmission and clutch was replaced by BMW under CPO warranty last June. They said the dual mass flywheel looked ok. Shifting while driving seems fine, but usually when I shift in to reverse to take of in the morning it feels like it almost gets stuck.

I've been reading lately that issues with the clutch master and/or slave cylinder could cause the issues with shifting into reverse. Have your clutch hydraulic system tested by a specialist.

Just brought it in to test this, and the bleed screw on the slave broke off when they were doing this, so it looks like I'm replacing the slave cylinder. I'll post an update if this changes anything.
They can here the noise, but not sure yet what it is, and now can't test because there is no pressure in the clutch system...

Clutch slave cylinder did fix any stickiness with 1-2 and in to R (feels much more precise now), but I'm still having the issue with the noise, but it seems to not happen as often now. I'm going to grab replace the front and rear diff fluids, give it a try, and then probably replace the transmission fluid, thinking of Red Line MTL since quite a few people on here like it.

Awesome. Glad that did it. I read from a ZF Specialist that you can also test your slave and master cylinders by parking your car on an incline and/or decline over night, then check for any resulting issues.

How many miles do you have on your trans? The OEM fluid should easily last 40,000+.
I just replaced my fluid this weekend and bit the bullet for the OEM LT2 ($$$$$$$$). I previously ran redline D4 and Pentosin MTF2 with horrible results. The OEM fluid is a ZF spec fluid (Castrol BOT 338) for our trannies that call for LT2 (check your bell housing) and learned the hard way. Using the Redline D4 and Pentosin resulted in rough, almost grinding shifts. My shifting appears to be back to normal with the OEM fluid. The redline MTF might work, but i had enough with experimenting.

I have some clatter while in neutral with the clutch pedal out from time to time, but dismissed it as the throw out bearing. It did seem to be louder when running non OEM fluid, so I'm not not sure about the throw out bearing now.

Bumping my older post. This noise started up again and it sounds definitely like it's coming from the transmission.
It only happens when it's rolling and on.
- Having it on a hoist with all 4 off the ground and putting it in first or second, the noise doesn't happen.
- Rolling down a hill with the car off doesn't happen. Down the same incline with the engine on, it does happen both in neutral and first/second, with the clutch in or out.
- Rolling down a hill in reverse, it doesn't happen with the car on or off.
- Clutch isn't slipping. Just replaced both front and rear diff fluids and the transfer case fluid.

If anyone has any ideas or how to narrow it down, I'm all ears. Wish it happened on the hoist, so I could actually get my head closer, but I'm not about to do that with a moving car...

I started hearing the same thing yesterday. I only noticed it when I slowed down at work to pull in my parking space and when I reversed out and cut the wheel other wise I think if the wheel is straight it wouldn't of made that noise. It kinda seemed that way while I was playing with it for a minute. I had my steering column replaced like a month ago. So I'm not sure. Sounds like its coming from the clutch but with a combination from the column causing it. If you find out your culprit let me know.

No luck on finding it, tried to do some testing with a couple of gopro's to see if I could hear where the sound is louder, but nothing. I may just have to take it in to the stealership... Still open to any suggestions if anyone has any
