Changed the pollen filter today, and I'd like to put forward the suggestion that BMW's interval of 2 years is too long...

Is the replacement an activated charcoal type? As it looks like a standard filter to me. If so won't be comparable to the typical 'grey' filter element.

Is the old filter really filthy?

I've just had another look. I ordered a charcoal filter, but it looks like they've sent me the plain one instead. The picture of the charcoal one on the website has the plastic bar across the middle, same as the OEM one.

But yes, the old one really is filthy, even if it started out grey!

New charcoal filters do look grubby anyway. If it is really is choked up, the air quality where you drive must be really bad. Or you are in a very dusty environment.

I had noticed, but did allow for it never being cleaned.

Pretty bad if it gets like that between the "weekly" cleans.

I looked at mine last week when doing the squeaky fan cure and it was quite black, I changed it just over a year ago, another job to do!

did mine today, wasn't as filthy as yours OP. Yours supplied isn't charcoal activiated, just bog standard looking at it.

i think that in what concerns the replacement of the cabin filter, bmw suggests every three years and not two!
i have also read posts in web that e90 owners replaced their cabin filter in two years time but regretted since there was no need. i also changed it in two years time (since i believe that 3 years are too long) but again i can say that it was like brand new...bare in mind that i use my a/c in a daily basis but my annual mileage is low.

probably one should take into consideration the environment that he/she lives/drives etc and also the mileage distances that does in annual basis. also, i believe that the frequency of a/c use is a factor that should be taken in mind.

Eh? Its with every oil change on an LCI.

Filters are mileage related of course, they have to be, how can two years be valid for a low mileage & a high mileage car??

2 years is the MAX time, same as oil is by mileage or 2 years MAX.

It used to be a separate service item, but since about 2008 it's lumped in with oil.

Not all BMW engineers. It's interesting how the guys in the M Division still insist on proper servicing for the M models (including so-called 'break-in' fluid changes). But if you're not intending to keep your BMW for a long time then I'm sure you'll be fine with CBS servicing...

Long interval servicing is not about looking after the car for the long term, or pampering it.

It's about marketing and getting away with doing the absolute bare minimum, yet still keeping the mean time to failure low enough to meet brand expectations.

10year / 186000 miles is the design life, that's all.

Perceived 'niche' products like M cars can still lean toward 'old fashioned' servicing as the typical enthusiast owner will put up with that regime.
