Auto Transmission whine during 1st to 2nd shift
I have a '06 330i a/t and I've noticed some of the odd shifting characteristics that have been mentioned on the forum (intermittent harsh shifts, slight whine on decel at low speed, etc). One additional issue I've noticed is a more noticeable whine sound when the car is shifting from first to second. This is the shift that seems a bit rough or abrupt sometimes. It is hard to know what is considered normal with these things transmissions. I've had the car to a shop and they said there were no leaks and fluid was at the correct level. Has anyone else experienced this noise?

Apologies for another post on this topic but still trying to figure this out. I've tried to pay more attention to this sound over the last couple weeks. The best way I can describe this issue is a quiet whine sound in first gear that matches acceleration, becoming slightly more pronounced during the shift from 1 to 2, and the. Completely disappearing in gears 2+.
Is there any legitimate/normal reason why first gear in the auto ZF tranny would have more of a whine than other gears? I've read that in manual models 1st gear is straight cut similar to reverse and therefore will create a whine. Any truth behind this or similarity to the auto trans? |

I can't speak to your specific transmission, but I've had some transmission problems in the past on my X5 and did a fair bit of research. The prognosis is not good. With automatic transmissions there are two things you can do:
1. Update the transmission software 2. Replace the fluid and filter If you go with #2, be aware there is a difference between a fluid change and a fluid flush. A change will only get about half of the fluid because the rest is in the torque converter. A flush will get it all but there are some who argue this is too aggressive on an older transmission. Also be very careful to get the correct fluid. Beyond that you are looking at a rebuild or reman (there is a difference) or perhaps best economically is to find a used one. Good luck! |

The squeal is probably not good news. It's not even in the "issues" list. Pg 16,17
I'd be surprised if you find an easy or cheep fix. Start thinking about a used or rebuilt transmission. https://s3.amazonaws.com/sonnax-dev/...AutoChoice.pdf |

Thanks for the input and advice. I have an appointment with a local BMW shop next week to have it checked.
Its hard for me to gauge the severity of the issue because it has stayed consistent since I bought the car (30k miles ago). I'll report back with any updates for those having the same problem. |

I would ask for an EGS software upgrade and do the fluid and filter. Even if it needs a rebuild or replace see how long you can squeeze out of it!
