White Lips on Black Wheels - Photos
I couldn't really find too many photos of white lips on black wheels when I decided to do this.. but I did it anyway. My lips were in *really* bad shape.. 5 Canadian winters on ASA wheels will do that. When I bought them (used) they were already rashed and gouged.
I didn't even knock off the rough gouges lol, I just hit them with 400 grit to get rid of the peeling clearcoat and all the dirt that was stuck under it. I used saran wrap (which is awesome btw) to cover the center with one strip of tape for a sharp line and cardboard jammed in the wheel/rim gap to protect the tire from the white $5 tremclad paint. The whole process took less than a hour of work, under two hours in total. Here's what I started with. Ugh. Sanded and masked off. Cardboard inserted: Before spraying, wipe the lip off with a tack cloth and don't touch it. I use latex gloves that have no talc in them from costco. Also important: first coat should be a mist coat, like this. Then after a full 10 minutes where the paint has dried just enough so it doesn't come off from the masking when you touch it, hit it again with a final coat. Et puis voila: USE THIS: The results: Hope it helps! Last edited by everlast; 02-14-2014 at 11:12 AM.. |

Not bad, not sure if I would have went with white on your color car though...
I know there is a M3 that a shop did, with large custom wheels that have black faces with a white lip. I have considered painting the lips of my wheels also, since they are all chipped up too, but I may do them in gunmetal... something I could not find pictures of at all. Good job. Nice idea of plastic wrap to mask off the center.

I think it would better on a white car but either way, I'm not feeling it. I think your car has to be an exotic to pull of this look or you need really high end wheels with a big 6"-7" lip.

I was going to paint them silver, but they'd look the same as they did.. boring. Was going to do lime but I didn't because lime. Black is lost on this color of car and gunmetal looks dirty on it. So what choice did I have? I wouldn't do this on a summer wheel.. its the contrast in the winter that makes it look good.
Super white lip right now fyi. |

they came out really nice but not feeling it on your car. It would look better if the center matched your car. Too many colors taking away from the beauty of your car.

Thanks for the compliments and all other feedback. The important part is that I really like it; certainly not for everyone. I agree, sparkling graphite metallic centers would look great, but these are wheels that spend 90% their time covered in salt and grime. I wash the car every couple of days and its still filthy all the time lol. Of course, I'm not going to be running soooper exotic wheels or spend huge loads of money on these. If I consider that I got these with tires that lasted two seasons and were worth say $50 per tire, then I have exactly $105 invested in these wheels.
$26.67 per wheel! Yeah, that's how I roll. |
