330d breather diameter?
Evening all I'm considering changing my breather for an external catch can. I Have already changed the bmw breather but would like some extra protection as such! The only pipe I am able to use is just under the MAF sensor. Does anyone know the diameter of the pipe?
I think it's different on both ends, I will be taking it off tomorrow to measure anyway. Does anyone have any advice on breather tank? |

I have a question relating to 330d engine. I would like to improve the breather system, now looking at the breather pipe before the turbo I dont have alot of room to put two breather pipes to a catch can.
My question is can I buy a 335d breather which I believe vents at the top of the engine into a pipe? then fit that and run a pipe from the breather to a catch can then to the intake pipe like normal? I know many might have the 335d so this might be a little difficult but hopefully someone might be able to help me. |

I looked at doing something similar but as you have noticed you would probably have to buy two commercially made 90deg bends.
You could try putting a vortex into your empty breather box. It helps, or if you dont mind changing the filters put a filter cartridge in there. |

Its quite a bit of work to get to the breather if I remember correctly so just wondering if that would help reduce my oil consumption and if so, howcome BMW didn't put either a filter or vortex in the original design? |

They have had several iterations of this breather. On the E46 they had the same box with a loo roll filter. They didnt have them on the service interval and some blocked causing excess pressure.
On the E90 they didnt put anything in the box. On the 5 series they put a vortex thingy in there. So BMW have never been able to make up their minds on this. They issued a PUMA for customers with high oil consumption to fit a loo roll filter in the empty box but only on complaint. The diaphragm and spring do not operate in any of the above as far as I know. BMW probably stole the part from a heinkel or something and thats why they have the vac nipple which isnt used. |
