Indeed. You can always use your USB to charge.

I have a usb connection and an aux-in. If you connect your iphone to the aux-in and to usb using separate cables you car wont play anything and an error saying your using the wrong cable will appear. You have to get the OEM y cable. I got one from amazon that works great and charges my iphone, which the oem cable doesnt do (thats what ive heard). http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...00_i01_details

Dont get the really cheap one though!

You may want to get an extension cable because this cable is really short and you wont be able to take your iphone out of the center console.

Extending the dock cable will most likely break the charging function with the additional resistance of the cable. I went through this and got the CableJive kit that includes the extension, dockstubz, and 12V mini USB charger. It works but you have to turn on the car before you plug in the iphone.

Mine worked fine, kept the charging functionality. I eventually stopped using the extension cable in the car because it was thicker than a normal iphone/ipod cable and didn't want to damage it with the center console lid or end up deforming the console rubber. Its up to you, and if you get a thinner cable it'll work fine. I just threw my old ipod in the center console with the Y cable and ended up using the extension cable to charge my phone at home, iphone cables are really short too. It charges fine also.

I believe that the functionality varies across model year. I've read that the 2011 and newer cars don't even need the BMW Y cable - you are supposed to be able to use the Apple white cable in the new cars.

Apple changed the charging functionality between 2007 and now so YMMV
