BMS / Shifteck shifter reviews

So one of the mods I've been eyeing for a while is a short-shifter, due to the awkward and clunky feel of the stock shifter. It's not too long, it's just imprecise and often has to be coaxed into gear, rather than slotting into gear as I'd like (and a several cars I have owned). I've been looking at the UUC shifter, but at >$350, its pretty expensive.

I just noticed THIS, the BMS Short shifter, for $129, which I understand is a re-branded Shifteck shifter. I can't seem to find any reviews or opinions on them though. I don't need to adjust the height, I'm really just looking for better shifting feel. Any opinions on this thing?

Bump for the night ... although my funding for this may have dried up, after hitting a pothole and breaking a wheel and tire tonight ... ugh.

Installed the shifteck ssk and it is an improvement over stock specially the shift from 2nd to 3rd. Shifts are shorter and more precise. I also added a weighted knob for a lighter shift.

Thanks. I had been avoiding this since I thought the UUC was just too expensive. This may be worth it for improving the shifting.

go with the BMS version as UUC never has any in stock and they can be notchy as hell. Plus, you will save roughly half for a product that is better.

it seems the lever is threaded where the knob goes.. did you have any trouble fitting the oem knob on there and if so is that what pushed you to get the weighted knob?

to be clear. i'm obviously not questioning why you'd prefer a weighted knob

no, but I have used UUC on two previous cars.

From what I've seen with BMS, they don't sell (or re-sell) anything that doesn't work well.

I agree with this. I have a ton of BMS stuff on my car and I love all of it. I just noticed it brand new on their website and couldn't find much of anything online about it.

They advertise this as accepting factory shift knobs, so hopefully it will. I have a ZHP knob that I really like and would like to carry over.

For the price, it looks amazing however, I just reviewed in DIY section and I didn't see OEM shift is that longer from short shifter. I am not sure if it is worth the pain to do.

Like I said, I don't really need a shorter shift or a lower shift knob. I just want a better shifting feel. I compare everything I drive to my 1996 Corvette with a Hurst shifter. Each gear sucked the shift knob like it was begging for it, and it had this "clunk - clunk" mechanical sound and feel. It was amazing. I just want that, or as close as I can get. At the very least, not the vague-feeling shifter that is stock.

Then I am not sure if BMS shifter will really help you in that. I think this depends on transmission more than shortshifter kit. I have the same problem as well. I don't like the BMW 335i shifting feel. Every time I drive my buddy's porsche I see a big hell of a difference. His car shifts really smoth and you never miss and feels amazing.

have you heard any feedback about knob fitment? it seems the lever is threaded right where it holds the knob.

The oem one fits on there without a problem. Weighted knob just reduce shift effort.

This. I come from F-bodies and being able to manhandle the t-56, the manual in my 335i makes me wish I bought an auto. The UUC shifter helped a tad but the overall feel is still pretty terrible

UUC is quite notchy. Personally have tried a few and I went back to the OEM shifter.

its only notchy sometimes...ive tried putting in different fluids like redline d4 d6 mtl and now 75w90 and seems like mtl worked probably the smoothest when it was warmed up. but i talked to hp autowerks and they recommend me using something lighter so im going to probably switch back to redline d6...but if i remember correctly it was a little notchy.

Thanks all for the great feedback. We're very glad that both Topgear Solutions and BMS are selling our shifter. We're very proud of our shifter and the great reviews that it has received. We strive to offer the best product possible at a price that is usually 20-40% less than the competition.

Please let TopGear Solutions or BMS know about anything you run into or suggestions that you have. They will relay it to us and we will all work together to create the best product for the market.

Is your shifter compatible with the UUC dssr, or do you guys offer one of those as well?
