Hi everyone. First of all I want to say that i've been reading these forums for a couple of months now but haven't posted till now. I bought a 2009 335i Sedan Montego Blue about a month ago. Unfortunately my building where I live in Brooklyn has no garage so i'm forced to park it outside. Two weeks ago when going to my car I noticed spots all over the drivers side rear door, roof, rear quarter panel, rear wheel, windows, and trunk. I quickly realized that it was paint! I looked around and I found paint all over the sidewalk of someones house too. They have kids so I guess they decided to have some fun at my expense. Anyways I used some compound polish and that removed the paint but there were still spots left where the paint was. I decided to use a rubbing compound lightly and that did the job. After wards I put on some more polish and then some Mothers wax. The car looked like new again and I thought everything would be fine now. Unfortunately today I noticed that the spots are showing up again! I used the compound polish and the spots are not visible again but I have a feeling that 2 weeks later they will return. Is there anything I could do/use that you guys can think of? Thanks for any help in advance.

try using a clay bar. I would reccomend ONR diluted as a clay lube. if you keep compounding over the same spots it might damage your clear. It might be that the compounds are just covering them up or maybe they keep painting your car when you're not looking

I second using a clay bar first. Use a mild clay bar and if that doesn't work use a more aggressive clar bar. Use the least aggresive method of removing before trying anything more aggresive or seek out an experienced detailer in your area.

I agree with this. That's not something I'd be willing to battle on my own at this point.

if the paint has been dry for a while forget using the clay bar. go to Home Depot and buy some Goof Off. it's basically a type of thinner/stripper and it's safe for clearcoat. just rub some on a piece of microfiber or cotton towel and let it soak on the paint for a little while before rubbing it off. after that, wash and wax your car.

I hate to say it, and I probably wouldn't if it was older, but an insurance claim is probably your best bet, as this looks like it's beyond a DIY paint correction.

This way at least, you can take it to the best body shop in town, and if they repaint your panels and give you a new wheel (hopefully) you'll sleep soundly knowing it's been repainted, and not just corrected (and you've got a brand new wheel, unless they can refinish it). Now about that color matching at the body shop........

I would try some kind of solvent before taking any drastic action. I believe walmart has a solvent called prep all that I would recommend trying. Also goof off might work as well. Just make sure to wash that are prior to trying anything to prevent swirls, and also wash it and wax it after using the solvents. A repaint should be a last resort, nothing is as good as factory paint.

I literally moved house last year because I have brought my 335i and I knew that my baby HAS TO BE garaged.

+1 Automotive lacquer thinner will remove paint drips but not break down the clear (this is like the stuff in Langka paint chip "blob remover" or whatever they call it).

Other than that, you're probably best off calling insurance and getting an estimate from a body shop, unfortunately.

Remember though, dont screw up your paint trying to remove it or insurance isnt going to want to cover it all.

I would just take it to a body shop and get it taken care of.

Rubbing compound + polishing compound is what I would have done. You might just need better lighting to catch all the spots.

Since your in Brooklyn, I can vouch for Anthony @ Big A detailing. He did an incredible job on my car last year when I got egged. Big A is located in Whitestone right off the Cross Island Parkway, Utopia Parkway exit.

If you are going to claim insurance, take it to Martino Auto Concept. They redid my car and it looks amazing. They are in Glen Cove, exit 39 on the Long Island Expressway. Check out my thread.
