Camera Vans..
On the A3 from Portsmouth to London yesterday, Just outside of Clanfield at the bottom of a long downhill section
Any ideas what the threshold is for these things? I've got the winter boots on, so the speedo may be on my side, but I guess 80-85. Am I in trouble? |

They are often on that bridge just after you come through the Butser hill section. My advice, always slow down there. The rest of the A3 is pretty much fair game though
I've been clocked by vans doing just over 80 and not had anything. Your speedo is probably out by 5% anyway, so you might be ok. |

Doh it depends if they where paying attention and actually working. If they where thought if you where past 77 they will probably be in touch.
You got 2 weeks wait to find out I'm afraid. I got lucky it seems as was in portsmouth yesterday got there at 10 and left at 3 but no vans on the journey. Must have been a short shift

Not just for 30mph zones. Think you can do awareness course from the threshold to the summons and can take course again after 3 years. This may help.
Speed limit: 20 mph ACPO charging threshold: 24 mph Summons: 35 mph Speed limit: 30 mph ACPO charging threshold: 35 mph Summons: 50 mph Speed limit: 40 mph ACPO charging threshold: 46 mph Summons: 66 mph Speed limit: 50 mph ACPO charging threshold: 57 mph Summons: 76 mph Speed limit: 60 mph ACPO charging threshold: 68 mph Summons: 86 mph Speed limit: 70 mph ACPO charging threshold: 79 mph Summons: 96 mph |

I was told by a traffic cop that the vans have a constable sitting in them who presses a button when they think someone is speeding. They are specifically told they are not allowed to be trigger happy as they have a limit of times they can press the button which is logged by the machine, and checked.
So basically if a lot of speeders were out that day (or modified saxo's that attract a lot of attention), you may get lucky.

in 2009 I was clocked at 70 in a 50 limit - I asked the traffic officer about courses but was told that I was going too fast to qualify, and I was certainly never offered one??

I don't know this road , is it a single dual or 3 laner ?
due to the distances /speeds and focussing involved the troll has to focus on a single area of road and wait for you to arrive in it. This is a precalculated distance and is often a white timing square you see on the roads from time to time and a lot lot further back than you think. By the time you get close enough to make out it's a van the picture is already printing , this is how and why they don't mind having to identify themselves with flashing lights or high viz safety stuff. Trolls cannot just go all Luke skywalker and aim the magic money wand and pull the trigger willy nilly, they'd never catch anyone by the time they had ID'd a prospective customer as they would have to focus , refocus and take a couple of zaps. So all in you would have to be in the right lane at the right speed and the in van troll would have to have his systems on ready and waiting. These trolls are some of the most hated people , even the police despise them because if a copper gets caught in a panda speeding with no emergency response , they get the book thrown at them. |

I got done on the A3 very recently doing 83mph. Closer to the M25 on the 3 lane bit.

I went on one of those speed awareness courses a few months back and I was told that the whole 10% + 2mph only applies to GATSOs etc. Police and police vehicles can prosecute you for anything over the speed limit (ie. 70).
Good luck though!, I hope you never get that letter in the post! |

I hate that feeling.
Just before Christmas I was going along and camera flashed. When I looked down I was about 8 mph over the posted limit. Every day for like 3-4 weeks (thought it being xmas period it could be a bit slow) coming home and looking at every brown letter with extreme suspicion. Luckily nothing ever came... Our penalties for speeding are far worse than the likes of Germany. My Grandad was done for 37 in a 30 and got hit with a €15 fine and no points! I hear though that now even if you take the speed awareness course option your insurance will still penalise you for it the same as if you had 3 points. |

Don't forget your idea of 80 is probably what you see with your eyes on your own speedo which in reality is probably 75-76 on a calibrated speed camera. So quite safe. Getting done at 81 and your speedo will most likely be showing 86-87 ...... And that is pushing your luck
