Using the Chunnel
I see a few of you have used this to get to Europe.
I may be coming back to the UK through London and might try this. Did you guys buy one of those flexible tickets ? Any tips - pros - cons ? D.

When are you coming over Dave ? And do you want me to book your car in? Using the Chunnel is easy - depends how long you are coming over to the UK for. If it's for more than a month or two, then it's cheaper just to buy a one-way ticket for when you come over, then go back either the same way or take a ferry (given you're in the North of UK). I have done a cheeky before and bought a cheap one-day return (which is roughly £49) or so, and not used the return part of the ticket. However, Eurotunnel are within their rights to charge you the difference between the one-day return and the one-way ticket if they think you've scammed the system. Although to be fair, they haven't tried to charge me for the difference yet!! Then the drive from Folkestone to central London will take about 1hr 45mins, depending on traffic. A KDS on its own will be around two to three hours (no more than that) and then if you want a general service on top you'll need to budget a bit extra time. It's probably a good time to do some Christmas shopping - drop the car in the morning, go off to Oxford Street or the like for some shopping, then back in the afternoon to pick up the car. Let me know your plans so I can make the necessary arrangements

Thanks Tony,
I was planning on getting back this week, but due to a little fuzzy brain fade after bumping into an Irish colleague and realising then taking full advantage that there was a free bar at our company's Xmas dinner (well the Swiss weren't) ... I duly left my camera behind - getting sent to me now by the caterers. was fun The Eurotunnel website isn't the best. It looks like they run almost 24 x 7 with the trains. So probably not under so much pressure as catching the ferry. I'll PM you with my dates. Thanks for the help, D.

i went last November overnight through the tunnel (drove to Paris for the rugby world cup final) only cost me £49 return for 4 people and my car.
I think the price depends what time you go and if you book exact times and don't just turn up, we went Saturday morning and came back Sunday morning the train was at 6:45! Quite fun driving back that early got overtaken by a British plated M6 doing should we say a touch over the limit drove 1400 miles in 24 hours! The tunnel is a piece of cake, better than a ferry IMO. |

My first excursion on the Chunnel was a show-up-and-go affair in 1995 and cost me £109 one way (£3.12 per mile toll). The passport stamp is a mighty expensive souvenier. When I was trying to book passage two weeks ago I was specifying times and even on early morning passages I was getting assinine pricing.

Tony: PM sent
Prices seem a wee bit nippy and variable - Eurotunnel website is pants, lots of offers but no-where to directly comapre. Still, worth it for the experience and convenience. Doubt I will use it again in a long time. D.
