Seriously good MPG when you try
Hi all,
First off - hello. This is my first 'real' post on this forum after lurking for a while and I'd just like to say that this forum has been both informative and amusing over the last few months that I've lurked (I've posted a brief intro in the 'newbies' setion). Anyway, on Monday SWMBO and myself went from out home town in West Wales to Coventry and I thought that I'd try and get as much MPG out of my 320d as realistically possible throught the journey without sacrificing air con etc. On the way up (circa 185 miles) the car averaged 69.5mpg according to the OBC!!! I must admit that I drove like an absolute shandy drinking big grils blouse (not that theres anything wrong with shandy or blouses - they are just not my thing) keeping to less than 2k revs and mostly leaving the cruise control manage the speed (set to 60 mph!!). Really difficult to do, but after the first hour I became accustomed to looking at things in a different light, at times even holding a conversation with the wife. On the return journey, the OBC reported a average of 64.something as I now went up to as much as 70mph!!! My point is I dont know how accurate the OBC actually is, but given the increasing cost of fuel higher mpg is do-able, although it's really difficult. I've been toying with getting a 335, but that'll be another thread as I've a few questions to put to you guys. Thanks for reading. |

Blimey that is good. Before I fitted my spider box I was getting at best 44.6 - but that possibly down to my driving style
Now with a spider, I am getting 47 but I dont trust the digital readout now with a box fitted. |

here in the states, if I use cruise control in my daily commute (20 miles to and from work) I can avg 32 MPG.
If i drive without the cruise control it goes to 24.5

With a 335i I get about 24-29 MPG depending on roads and driving style.
All in all I get between 300 -410 miles per tank. Not bad for a 300BHP car!!

On my weekly trip to/from Newbury I average 45mpg which reduces to 38/39 if I include weekend mileage.
Trips to Glasgow where the risk of traffic jams on the M6 are much reduced - therefore higher average speed (but not mad enought to get caught) result in 41/42. Do those of you using tuning boxes or having remaps all notice an increase in fuel economy i.e. could one justify the purchase purely on economy grounds

Trouble is you cannot rely on the computer giving you an accurate MPG figure after fitting a box. Next time I fill up I will see how many miles I do on a tank full. Before a Spider I was getting ~600 with 44.6MPG.

I reckon the remaps frig the OBC - not convinced on the MPG to be honest so its probably academic.. Does the OBC take throttle pedal position v speed to work out consumption? - if it does this is where the frig happens. The map definitely reduces the distance you need to depress the pedal to get a certain amount of power over stock.. |

I gave up with MPG when I was told by BMW my E46 330Ci was the worst they'd ever seen - for MPG, lol!
They couldn't believe it I thought 18-20 was fine and perfectl acceptable out of a 330, they said that was worse then most E46 M3s, I just told them I drive my car as intended

If I ever get more than 24MPG then I'll know I'm really getting old....

I was surprised by the MPG from my journey today (mostly motorway) between Bristol and London. Not bad for a 4.0 V8...

I've just managed an average of 44.9 mpg from my 335D which has also had the remap. I've now done 32000 miles in her. This is the best all-round car i have ever owned .
